Record turnout among Palestinian citizens of Israel could dictate election results
The elections saw a surge in voting among the country’s Arab population, which has traditionally voted at lower rates than Jewish Israelis. Palestinian citizens of Israel – roughly 20 percent of the country’s population – were driven by an urgent desire to topple Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition. A majority of Jewish voters oppose partnering with the Arab parties, leaving opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot’s path to victory unclear.
