Charles Barkley struggled to hold back tears as he addressed Ernie Johnson's decision to step away from "Inside the NBA" after the 2026-27 season.

The Hall of Famer has spent more than two decades alongside Johnson, and he wasn't the only panelist moved by the announcement.

Charles Barkley Gets Emotional After Ernie Johnson's Major Announcement

Johnson, who has hosted "Inside the NBA" since 1990, announced Wednesday on social media that he will leave the show at the end of the season, concluding a 37-year run. His departure will mark the first major change to the show's longtime lineup in years.

Barkley addressed the news alongside fellow panelists Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith, reflecting on the years he has spent with the legendary studio host.

"That was tough," Barkley admitted. "We knew the day was coming. It's still tough. I've been here 26, 27 years, and it's been an honor and a privilege to work with you all this time."

"Even though I knew this was coming, it's still hard, brother," the former NBA MVP added , describing Johnson as the "leader" of their group.

Barkley joined "Inside the NBA" in 2000, becoming a regular presence alongside Johnson and Smith. O'Neal joined the panel in 2011, completing the quartet that has since become one of television's most recognizable broadcasting teams.

Over the years, the four have developed a chemistry built around their contrasting personalities, with Johnson often guiding discussions as Barkley, Smith, and O'Neal debate games, players, and league developments. Their exchanges have become a regular part of NBA coverage beyond the games themselves.

Smith compared working with Johnson to entering the Houston Rockets' locker room for the first time. The two-time NBA champion credited the veteran broadcaster's energy for giving him the belief that their group could accomplish something special.

O'Neal, meanwhile, said the chance to work with Johnson helped persuade him to join "Inside the NBA."

In his announcement, Johnson revealed that he has dealt with "heart issues" over the past two years. Although his doctor had not advised him to step away, the longtime host said he wanted to spend more time with his family. His decision comes after decades of balancing a demanding broadcasting schedule with his personal life.

The veteran sportscaster also clarified that he is not retiring from broadcasting entirely. He plans to continue covering March Madness and pursuing other television projects, while his new production company, "32 Bowties," will focus on telling "feel-good stories" in sports.

Johnson will continue hosting "Inside the NBA" through the 2026-27 campaign before stepping away from the show.
