George Lloyd gave Salop a one-goal lead going into the break before Kian McMahon-Brown doubled their advantage on the hour mark, with Finlay Cartwright's first Mariners goal being only a consolation.

Will Brook was forced into a save early on as Charles Vernam ran through on goal, with Harvey Rodgers unable to make use of the rebound.

Shrewsbury took the lead in the 19th minute through former Grimsby loanee Lloyd, who got the final touch as the ball was headed into his path from a corner.

The visitors doubled their lead on the hour when McMahon-Brown struck a well-controlled volley into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Justin Amaluzor had a close-range effort blocked well from a long throw, and Edon Pruti shot just wide from a cutback, but it was substitute Cartwright who headed Grimsby's reply in the 75th minute, provided by another replacement - Iwan Morgan.
