New DC monument displays the names of 41 million veterans

( NewsNation ) — A new monument on the National Mall is displaying the names of 41 million American veterans.

The National Military Monument, a temporary installation, will be on display through Nov. 12 to honor those who have served.

The one-of-a-kind monument features the names of more than 41 million service members, veterans and those who are currently serving, spanning across branches and generations alike.

Those names scroll through on the lines of the American flags, with two of them displayed on the National Mall. It takes days to go through all of the names.

Monument sponsor United States Automobile Association (USAA) told NewsNation that the response to the monument has been overwhelming for visitors.

“This was the first time for USAA to do something like this. We wanted to do something big for America 250, and just the feedback has been tremendous and overwhelming. You know, the lines of people hours long just to come pull up a loved one’s name or their own name on the monument and people told us they wanted it here longer,” said Christian Bove, USAA communications director. “So we listened and with the support of the National Park Service, we’re able to have this out here through November 12.”

The interactive nature is one of the unique features of the monument, with people on hand to help visitors search for a name and pull it up for display on the screen, allowing people to take photographs with the name of the veteran they are honoring.
