Democrats lead by 3 points on a generic ballot against Republicans with the midterms less than three weeks out, according to a new poll.
The AARP poll, released Thursday, found 49 percent of respondents backed Democrats and 46 percent backed Republicans, while 5 percent were unsure about their choice of party.
The slight lead for Democrats comes amid rocky political territory for the GOP. The party is facing down issues like the unpopular war in Iran, Trump’s slumping approval rating and concerns about the cost of living.
The poll surveyed 1,368 likely voters within congressional districts that the nonpartisan election handicapper labeled as toss-ups or leaning Republican or Democrat at the time, from Oct. 1-5. The margin of sampling error was 2.7 percentage points.
In the poll, Trump’s approval rating among respondents was 42 percent, with his disapproval at 56 percent.
Fox News earlier this week predicted Democrats will retake the House in this year’s midterms, the first time the outlet has predicted a win of either chamber of Congress by Democrats in this election cycle.
“Combined with Democrats’ candidate quality improvements and a Republican-led redistricting effort that could fall short of expectations, the House is likely out of reach for the GOP this year,” Fox News contributor Rémy Numa said while discussing his latest power rankings, which were released Tuesday.
