Most Americans are against the livestreaming of the execution of the Fort Hood shooter, according to a new poll .

In the ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, 80 percent of respondents were against former Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s execution being “live streamed online for the American public to watch.” Eighteen percent were for livestreaming the execution and 2 percent did not answer the question.

The survey arrived hours before President Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Thursday that Hasan “will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed.”

“That said, the execution may be viewed in person by the immediate families of the victims, if they so choose,” the president added.

Last Thursday , Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the firing squad execution of Hasan, the convicted Fort Hood shooter, would be publicly viewable. Hasan is a former Army psychiatrist who in 2009 opened fire at Fort Hood, Texas, leaving 13 dead.

Hasan is set to be executed on Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. local time at Fort Hood, the U.S. Army has said. It would be the first U.S. military execution in more than six decades and the first by firing squad since World War II.

“Of course we’re going to do it at Fort Hood. We’re going to do it on a Thursday, we’re going to do it at 1 o’clock, which is when he did it, and it’s going to be soldiers with rifles executing the firing squad,” Hegseth told Real America’s Voice last week.

“We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” he added.

The poll found 53 percent of respondents backed the firing squad execution of Hasan, while 42 percent were against it and 6 percent did not respond to the question.

The ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll took place from Oct. 9 to 13, featuring 2,545 people and plus or minus 2 percentage points as its margin of error.
