With barely any time to recover from the midweek fixtures, Serie A returns tomorrow for a 10th round packed with intriguing storylines.
Two heavyweight clashes, one between fallen giants, intriguing relegation battles and meetings between struggling sides: here are the main talking points of the round.
⚠️ Allegri and Spalletti: who turns things around and who falls apart?
Juventus and Napoli have collected 14 points in 9 games . That is not even enough for a European spot, with Frosinone occupying one three points ahead. Both teams are 11 points behind Inter and Lazio and desperately need to turn things around.
They head into the game in different circumstances, though. Napoli have picked up 7 points against Bodo/Glimt, Roma and Monza, while Juventus suffered a dismal defeat to Genoa on Wednesday. Both coaches know that a defeat would put them under serious scrutiny , while a win could provide the turning point they so badly want.
🤔 Are Inter really in better shape than Milan?
The league leaders head into the Milan derby sitting top and holding a 7-point lead in the table over the Rossoneri. But all that glitters is not gold. Their 9 points from the last 3 games across the Champions League and Serie A are beyond dispute, but the performances have been far from brilliant.
Amorim's team suffered a heavy defeat to Bologna at San Siro and appear to be badly affected by injuries. Bouncing back against a top club will not be easy, but this huge clash is also a chance to send a message to the rest of the league.
🤩 Will Frosinone-Torino be the best game of the round?
What more is there to say about Frosinone? The league's second-best attack , first for first-half goals, and counter-pressing numbers worthy of a European giant: Massimiliano Alvini's newly promoted side are a joy to watch.
Torino do not reach those heights, but they are a team with a clear identity and style of play. Last year in Serie B, Ignazio Abate made life difficult for Frosinone with his Juve Stabia side, losing 1-0 but creating plenty of chances. Another wide-open match looks likely.
🏆 Can Palladino secure European football?
10 points in 5 games: an outstanding return that has erased the terrible start to the season under Domenico Tedesco. Raffaele Palladino kept Fiorentina in the Conference League two years ago and repeated the feat at Atalanta last year.
By the club management's own admission, Bologna did not start the season with that kind of target. If this run continues, however, nothing is impossible. The Monza game will be a test of maturity for the Rossoblù, who could continue closing the gap on the upper reaches of the table.
😱 Is Sassuolo-Fiorentina a relegation battle?
The question goes beyond the 90 minutes. The table currently says yes, but nobody could have predicted it at the start of the season. Alberto Aquilani made a superb start, beating Juve and holding Milan, but has now become bogged down. The Neroverdi have conceded 22 goals , giving them the worst defensive record in Serie A.
Unlike Sassuolo, Fiorentina's false dawn came later. After Grosso's disastrous start, Paolo Vanoli picked up two wins and a draw and looked set to climb the table. Instead, the Viola are in the relegation zone on 5 points and risk reliving last year's nightmare .
