Russia hand India another reality check, win 8-0

KOLKATA: India head coach Crispin Chettri was seen making a solemn gesture of disappointment on the touchline when Darina Ishmukhametova gave Russia the breakthrough in the 22nd minute at Kishore Bharati Krirangan here on Sunday.Despite Russia head coach Yuri Krasnozhan retaining only two players from the starting line-up that secured a 4-0 win in the first friendly on Thursday, the visitors once again showcased their class and quality, beating hosts India 8-0 in the second ‘unofficial’ international match. For the opening 21 minutes, the Indians virtually parked the bus in their own half and managed to keep the relentless Russian attacks at bay, thanks largely to some determined defending, especially from Ranjana Chanu. However, Ksenia Dolgova sent in a cross from the left that goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem failed to hold on to, and Darina was on hand to tap home. The opener, as Chettri seemed to have anticipated, opened the floodgates as the world No. 27 side pumped in four more goals before half-time, much to the frustration of the sparse crowd supporting the hosts. While Marine Acholan (25th, 45+1) scored a quick brace, Diana Kishmakhova (30th) added another before Darina completed her brace with a penalty in the 42nd minute. Chettri did what he could, making tactical adjustments and substitutions across the field, bringing on Nandini in goal, Jasoda Munda in midfield, and pairing Babysana Devi with Lynda Kom Serto up front. However, it was a substitution made by Russia coach Krasnozhan that had the biggest impact. Star striker Natalia Mashina, who plays in the Turkish Women’s Super League, came on and scored twice in two minutes (49th, 51st) to restart the rout. There were, however, some positives from the Indian substitutions. Nandini showed glimpses of her ability with a few crucial saves, while the players displayed greater intent in venturing into the Russian half.Stay updated with the latest Asian Games 2026 news, check the Asian Games medal tally and complete Asian Games schedule.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
