Despite missing practice Tuesday, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson avoided a significant injury.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Friday that while Richardson tweaked his groin muscle lifting weights this week, he is healthy and will remain the team's backup quarterback for Sunday's contest against the Kansas City Chiefs, per James Boyd of The Athletic.

Daniel Jones will remain the starter, while Riley Leonard is in the third-string role.

It has been some time since Richardson, who entered the league as the No. 4 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft, has taken meaningful snaps. While he started four games as a rookie and 11 games in 2024, he did not record a single start last season and threw just two total passes.

This surely isn't the role the Colts envisioned when they used a top-five draft pick on him with the idea he would eventually become their franchise quarterback.

Alas, he struggled in 2024 when given the chance to be the team's full-time starter and completed just 47.7 percent of his passes for 1,814 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He did add 499 yards and six touchdowns on the ground as a runner, but the struggles in the aerial attack stood out.

Ideally for Indianapolis, Jones will remain healthy and thrive after leading the team to an 8-5 record in his 13 starts last season before he suffered a torn Achilles.

Yet if there are any issues against the Chiefs, Richardson will be ready to take over as needed despite a minor setback leading up to the game.
