Cowboys' Schottenheimer Reacts to Viral Visor Meme, Explains Using Different Colored Pens in Games

Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer says he might invest in a multi-colored pen after the multiple writing implements tucked into his visor drew attention during last Sunday's season-opening loss at the New York Giants.

Schottenheimer told reporters Friday his daughter had sent him memes referencing his storage technique, including an AI image of his head covered in pens he described as "a little overdone."

"I am going to get one of those pens that's got the multicolors, you know, where you can go red, brown," Schottenheimer said. "I've got a lot of stuff in my pockets. I've got a red flag I've got to carry... maybe I'll just make [chief of staff] Tyler Boyles stand next to me and hold all my pens."

He added that he uses different colors to mark plays that have already been called versus plays he plans to call later in the game.

Schottenheimer has been walking the Cowboys sidelines with pens tucked beneath his visor since taking over as head coach ahead of the 2025 season.

He said last year he saw his visor as somewhat of an ode to College Football Hall of Fame coach Steve Spurrier, who he played for at Florida in the late '90s.

Schottenheimer is looking to lead the Cowboys back into the playoffs after a 7-9-1 finish to his first season as the helm. He'll look to start that push by bouncing back from Week 1's loss during Sunday's home opener against the visiting Washington Commanders.
