In one of the best trades in Hornets franchise history, Charlotte traded center Mike Brown to the Utah Jazz ahead of the 1988-89 season in exchange for former No. 12 overall pick Kelly Tripucka. After averaging 7.5 points with Utah during the 1987-88 season, Tripucka averaged 22.6 points in his first season with the Hornets, more than a 15-point increase.

The former Notre Dame forward would go on to play three seasons with the Hornets before playing professionally in France. In 227 appearances with Charlotte, Tripucka averaged 14.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.2 blocks while shooting 45.1% from the field and 35.6% from 3-point range. Throughout his 10-year career between the Hornets, Jazz and Pistons, Tripucka averaged 17.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, three assists and one steal.
