2X NBA Champion Says Giannis-Bam Adebayo Frontcourt Is Living Cheat Code for Heat Offense

Bam Adebayo has spent years carrying a heavy load for the Miami Heat without needing much help to define his game. He has defended the other team's best bigs, created from the middle of the floor and taken on whatever offensive job the matchup demanded.

That could look different next season. Mario Chalmers believes the arrival of Giannis Antetokounmpo could give Adebayo a new lane on offense without taking away the role that has made him so valuable on defense.

Bam Adebayo Could Show More Of His Offensive Game

Chalmers sees room for Adebayo to stretch the floor more, particularly from three-point range. The idea is not to turn him into a different player, but to give him more chances to use skills that have often taken a back seat to everything else Miami asks from him.

"I think Bam is going to show his versatility more, his 3PT shot more. I expect more from Bam this year but still the defensive anchor and that guy he's always been," Chalmers said .

That last part matters. Bam Adebayo does not need to stop being the Heat's defensive anchor for his offense to grow, and Chalmers clearly does not expect that tradeoff.

The bigger change could come from where Adebayo gets his chances. With another elite player handling a large share of the defensive attention, Bam may not have to manufacture every scoring opportunity himself.

That is where Chalmers' prediction gets more interesting. Antetokounmpo can put a defense in a bind the moment he gets downhill, and those possessions can create the kind of clean perimeter looks that are harder to find when Adebayo carries more of the creation burden.

"I'm expecting Bam to have more open looks than he's ever had in his career playing alongside Giannis," Chalmers said.

For Bam Adebayo, those chances could come without a major change to his responsibilities. He can still screen, attack mismatches and anchor the defense, then step outside when Giannis draws help.

The Heat have already leaned on Adebayo as one of their most trusted players. Chalmers is betting that Giannis can make the next part of his game easier to see.

That would give Bam a different kind of offensive lane in Miami, one built less on creating everything himself and more on exploiting the attention his new teammate commands.
