Vic Fangio on Jalen Carter’s conditioning Week 1: “It wasn’t terrible”

The Eagles are now moving on from their season opener, but DC Vic Fangio spoke on Tuesday about some of the issues the defense faced against the Commanders, on why Moro Ojomo 's stop was so impressive, and what he expects from Cam Ward and the Titans in Week 2.

Fangio was asked about his overall takeaway from the Week 1 win, and he didn't hold back.

"Disappointed in their three scoring drives. There's some scoring drives you give up where the other team just beats you. They've got good players and good coaches, too. But I think we could have played a little better in some of those instances from our just overall play, so that was a little frustrating."

"The last two drives there, we just didn't play well enough. The quarterback scrambling hurt us some. It wasn't good the last couple for sure."

Fangio was asked about Cooper DeJean 's post-game comments about his eyes get bad and that's what hurts him. The DC agreed that can happen at times, but also noted at other times, that quality has helped him.

"[Cooper DeJean]'s just got to make sure he can stay tight enough to his assignment and not let his vision get too skewed to where he gets out of position."

The DC also gave all the credit to Ojomo for sniffing out the play because it wasn't something the Commanders had put on film prior to the game.

"It was just a great play by him individually. Like he said, he saw the guard pull, so he immediately tried to cross the guy that was trying to block him, which he did successfully and made the play. Was a big play by him obviously, but to have the energy and the wherewithal to do that that late in the game was big."

Fangio later talked about about Ojomo's play and how his instincts are both natural and something he works on. He also highlighted the effort Ojomo plays with and how that impacts things as well.

"But [Ojomo] does have good instincts, but he gives great effort and he's tenacious."

" It wasn't terrible. We did have a lot of reps, but a good bit of them came the last drive of the first half and then those last two drives. Those other drives were kind of shorter in duration, so it's a little easier to play that many."

Fangio was very complimentary of Titans QB Cam Ward, noting that the quarterback has very good arm talent, and he's athletic and mobile. The DC said Ward is progressing well and thinks the QB will continue to improve in Tennessee 's offense.

He also said that new Titans OC Brian Daboll does a good job of calling the game and has a good run-pass mix. Fangio expects Tennessee to take some shots in the passing game, but also get a mix of some quicker throws.

"I think [Brian Daboll] does a good job of mixing it up, not just run and pass, but the types of run and passes, too."

Fangio said that Jihaad Campbell "did fine" in the season opener, but said that there were plays he'd like back.

The DC revealed that OLB AJ Epenesa got dinged up in the game against the Commanders, which is why OLB Arnold Ebiketie got more reps.

He said that second-year safety Andrew Mukuba did a good job communicating on the backend, although Fangio added that the performance wasn't perfect, but it was good.

Fangio also said that the safety duo of Mukuba and Marcus Epps did fine, even though he noted that there were some plays that could have gone better from an assignment or execution standpoint.

The DC said he's very pleased with CB Riq Woolen 's performance, and thought he had good focus and did a good job covering.

He also explained that Zack Baun was able to participate in all of training camp, unlike last year, and Fangio highlighted that more practice tends to lead to better game performances. Still, the DC said he appreciates everything from what Baun was able to do on Sunday, and the LB played really well.
