Bayern Munich announces contract extension for sporting director Christoph Freund

Bayern Munich has made another important commitment to the club's sporting structure, announcing that sporting director Christoph Freund has signed a contract extension through June 30, 2029 per the club website .

Freund, 49, joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 after spending 17 years in management at RB Salzburg. Since arriving in Munich, he has been part of a period that has already produced two Bundesliga titles, a DFB-Pokal, and two Franz Beckenbauer Supercups.

Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen emphasized just how important Freund has become to the club's sporting operation.

"Christoph Freund plays a central role in all of our sporting decisions – and we are pleased that he will continue to work for FC Bayern in the future. The successes of recent years are in part thanks to his stellar work. Christoph maintains an excellent working relationship with Vincent Kompany, is closely involved with the team and, at the same time, keeps a close eye on all sporting matters," Dreesen said. "When he joined FC Bayern in 2023, we expected him not only to provide important impetus for our first team, but also to bring a fresh approach to youth development and the link between the first team and the Campus. He has more than fulfilled those expectations, and we look forward to continuing to develop our whole sporting division together with him."

Board member for sport Max Eberl also highlighted Freund's importance across the club.

"I am delighted that Christoph will continue to work with all of us on FC Bayern's sporting direction. Christoph is a valuable member of our team and a central figure in the sporting division, from the first team and staff down to the FC Bayern Campus. We complement each other in our day-to-day work, enjoy working together and are always guided by the shared goal of constantly pushing FC Bayern forward," Eberl stated.

With Freund now tied down through 2029 and Eberl also recently inking a contract extension, Bayern Munich has secured continuity in a key part of the sporting leadership structure.
