South Dakota football rolls past Eastern Washington, moves to 3-0

South Dakota ripped off 21 consecutive points between the second and third quarters to turn a 10-3 lead into a 31-3 advantage, and the Coyotes finished off a 41-23 win over Eastern Washington on Saturday, Sept. 12, in the DakotaDome.

The Coyotes scored all three touchdowns during that run on long plays. Austyn Modrzewski hit Tennell Bryant for a 66-yard touchdown, then Charles Pierre Jr. ripped off a 72-yard touchdown run. Modrzewski and Bryant connected again for a 48-yard passing score.

Eastern Washington scored touchdowns for three of the final five scores of the game to make the final margin closer.

Modrzewski finished 16-for-24 for 245 yards and three touchdowns passing, but he did throw his first collegiate interception on a pass to the end zone. He also ran the ball three times for 15 yards.

Bryant had three catches for 120 yards and the two scores, Brayden White contributed four catches for 34 yards and a touchdown, Tysen Boze hauled in two passes for 44 yards, Pierre had a 21-yard grab and Keyondray Jones-Logan had three receptions for 17 yards.

Pierre had his biggest day of the season on the ground, running for 138 yards and two scores on 15 totes. Jones-Logan had 49 yards on eight rushes, Jackson Proctor ran it five times for 50 yards and Carson Fletcher had five carries for 18 yards.

Nate Laperi led the Coyote defense with two sacks, while Chris Dixon , Asher Tomaszewski and Tyler Sapit all recorded one each. Ethan Carrier picked a pass off and ran it back 44 yards, and Gabriel Hardman had two tackles for a loss and a forced fumble.

The Coyotes are now 3-0 and will travel to FBS Boise State on Saturday, Sept. 19.
