UTSA, Texas State fans battle 100-degree hazardous weather in San Marcos

Last week, fans at Darrel K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium fled into the shade as heat made the Texas vs. Texas State game unbearable to the Austin crowd. Today, the Bobcats returned to San Marcos for their home opener but the heat remained a menace.

Texas State hosted UTSA on Saturday, September 12, as part of the annual I-35 rivalry series. The game also served as the Bobcats' first home game as members of the Pac-12. However the stadium was far from packed as the San Marcos faithful dealt with 100-degree temperatures and hazardous weather conditions, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) .

The X account Bobcat Nation called out the lack of attendance, writing, "Stadium is EMPTY at KickOFF. An Absolute failure by @TXST."

Fans in attendance were quick to reply, writing that many fans were in attendance but hiding from the sun by remaining in the stadium concourse. Others cited college football's lack of understanding Texas weather, saying all September games need to be in the evening to fight the extreme temps.

A stadium shot during the live broadcast put the situation in perspective, showing a large group of fans sitting in the shade while the seats in the sun were almost empty.

San Marcos is expected to see temperature highs of 101 degrees with a heat index as high as 107, according to the NWS. Temperatures could drop as low as 76 degrees this evening with slight chances for showers throughout the night.
