UCLA broke away from Cal in the second half last Saturday night for a 45-24 victory, piling up six rushing touchdowns — just two off its total of eight in 2025. Anthony Knight finished with 71 yards and three scores on only eight carries, while Anthony Woods piled up 118 yards and two TDs on eight attempts and quarterback Nico Iamaleava also had a running touchdown while finishing 14-of-22 for 184 yards and an interception. The Bruins ran for 277 yards at an 8.7-yard-per-carry clip.

San Diego State took the lead late in the first quarter and never looked back in a 53-20 thumping of visiting FCS Portland State last Saturday night. Lucky Sutton ran for 58 yards and three touchdowns while Javion Kinnard picked up 79 yards on eight attempts. Jaydel Denegal finished 12-of-17 for 137 yards and two touchdowns with an interception, tossing TD passes to Justius Lowe and Nathan Acevedo.

The Bruins finished 3-9 last season after firing coach DeShaun Foster three games into the season. Chesney came to UCLA from James Madison , where he was 21-6 and reached the College Football Playoff last season. The Aztecs went 9-4 last season, missing out on the Mountain West Conference championship with a loss at New Mexico before also losing the New Mexico Bowl a month later. San Diego State plays its first season in the reconstituted Pac-12 Conference this season.
