A.J. Brown Injury Creates Major Questions About Patriots’ 2026 Expectations

The New England Patriots will officially be without wide receiver A.J. Brown for a month or more this season after he suffered a high ankle sprain and will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.

On Friday, the team officially placed him on the injured reserve list, as he is expected to be out for the next 3-6 weeks. That amount of time puts his return around midseason if he is out for the full amount mentioned.

This raises some questions going forward. What kind of team will the Patriots be upon his return? Who will be the temporary WR1? Can Drake Maye bounce back from the Week 1 loss 'without Brown ?

What we really should be asking is, does this injury sour the deal the Patriots have with Brown?

A high ankle sprain is no joke for a wide receiver. The explosiveness off the snap, the ability to cut and juke out a defender, and the extra speed picked up downfield to make a play all regress a bit even after being cleared to play. Brown may be back on the field in a month and a half. But what version do we get of him when he does return?

There is another thing to consider here too. Maye and Browns chemistry on the field has only had training camp practices to take shape. The pair has had basically only two quarters of on-field actual competitive play.

A prime example is the under-throw on the flea-flicker pass from Maye to Brown. It's clear these two still need time to develop, and they might not get that for some time.

When acquiring Brown, there was always the looming issue of degenerative wear and tear on both his knees. Reports about him needing fluid drained from both of them date back. Many felt the issue would take Brown off the field at some point during the season, and more and more as time went on.

The fact is that the Patriots have Brown under contract through the 2029 season. A whole slew of logistics comes into play if the team were to even consider trading Brown a little earlier than that. But of course, it's too early to even begin thinking something like that.

However, unless Brown can fully look like what many expected him to look like on the field in a month and a half, there is going to continue to be a narrative over time that this current ankle injury has created some doubt around Browns ability to be the WR1 for the foreseeable future for the Patriots.
