Texas linebacker coach suspended for UTSA game after arrest on DWI charges

AUSTIN - Texas linebacker coach Johnny Nansen will serve a one-game suspension and not be available to coach at the Longhorns' football home game against UTSA on Saturday night, a source told the Houston Chronicle Friday.

Nansen, 52, was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said Thursday. Nansen was involved in a three-car crash in west Austin and subsequently showed signs of impairment, according to multiple reports. He is charged with a Class B misdemeanor.

"We had an unfortunate situation last evening. Coach Nansen was charged with a misdemeanor DWI," Sarkisian said Thursday. "We obviously are aware of the situation. I'm still gathering facts. I'm still monitoring the situation. We're obviously disappointed, but that's all I really have on that at this time."

Nansen has been with Texas since 2024, serving under former defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

The Austin American-Statesman reported that Austin police responded to a three-vehicle crash on the South Capital of Texas highway at 8:55 p.m. Wednesday night. Nansen was the driver of one of the vehicles, and he "displayed signs consistent with possible impairment. Officers conducted standardized field sobriety tests and observed multiple clues of impairment."

Nansen, who serves as co-defensive coordinator with Will Muschamp, was not at the Texas practice Thursday morning.
