Anna Nordqvist comments on Charley Hull and Lottie Woad Solheim Cup pairing after day one woes

European captain Anna Nordqvist put Charley Hull and Lottie Woad out together as the first pairing on Friday at the Solheim Cup.

Hull and Woad struggled badly and lost 4&3 to Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz before halving their afternoon four-ball match against Yealimi Noh and Angel Yin.

The scores were tied at 4-4 after the first day's play in the Netherlands.

And Charley Hull and Lottie Woad were the worst performing duo on day one of the Solheim Cup .

Hull praised Woad's game at the Solheim Cup on Friday, but they lacked the kind of chemistry required to succeed in team competition.

Now European captain Nordqvist has responded to criticism she has received for sticking with the pairing.

Nordqvist spoke to reporters after Hull and Woad took just 0.5 points from their two matches on Friday.

She responded when asked what her thinking was behind sticking with the duo.

" Yeah, I mean, like I said, foursome is a hard format, and I think the way this course sets up, I mean, there's quite a bit of difference who has the approach shots and iron shots, " she said.

" I think Lottie said that on hole 15, she really only had hit, like, two or three shots in the last maybe two hours.

" So foursome has always been the hardest format because it's really hard to get into pace and a rhythm. It was really cold this morning, the wind. So, yeah, like, it just takes a little bit of time, I feel like, to get in a rhythm.

" But they were also playing world No. 1, Nelly Korda, and Corpuz, who we know is a very strong pairing and they play really good. So I think that's the beauty with match play, right?

" Like, you can play good and the other team just plays better. But they fought hard, and I'm proud that we put out that pairing, and I think it's a very strong pairing for us. "

Those comments from Nordqvist simply do not ring true.

Sure, one team can play better than the other, but chemistry between two players is hugely important, and it cannot be disregarded.

Keegan Bradley made the same mistake by pairing Collin Morikawa and Harris English together on day one of the Ryder Cup last year.

It seems like Anna Nordqvist was too stubborn to make the change that quite clearly needed to be made.

Team Europe's hopes of winning the Solheim Cup will undoubtedly be affected as a result.
