3 defensive players to watch during Steelers' Week 1 matchup vs. Falcons

The Pittsburgh Steelers ' defense really hasn't lived up to its position as the highest-paid unit in the NFL, but that could very soon change in 2026 with Patrick Graham at DC. Pittsburgh's first opportunity to return to its former defensive glory comes in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons , and there are plenty of talented players to keep a close eye on.

From an aging edge rusher in hopes of a bounce-back year to a versatile defensive back who can play a variety of roles on Pittsburgh's defense, here are three of the Steelers ' defensive players to watch during the regular-season opener versus the Falcons.

Watt didn't have the 2025 season fans were hoping for. He dealt with multiple injuries and unfortunately didn't have the same impact as a pass rusher or a run defender. Luckily for Watt, he's expected to thrive in Pittsburgh's new defensive scheme. His first real test? Against an injury-ridden Falcons team down to its third-string quarterback. Watt's road to redemption begins on Sunday.

Harmon was great during his rookie season and is expected to take a big jump in Year 2. Pittsburgh's inconsistent run defense will certainly be put to the test against All-Pro running back Bijan Robinson . Harmon will be a player to keep a close eye on as the Steelers' defensive line does its best to limit Robinson from taking over the game.

Ramsey has a new role in 2026 as a slot cornerback/money linebacker. But Pittsburgh also has a depth concern at safety, where Ramsey played a large number of snaps last season. When it comes to the Falcons' assortment of pass catchers, including Drake London and Kyle Pitts , the Steelers will need Ramsey at his very best.
