Porter’s twin sons get NIT Rourkela key in 2nd attempt

Rourkela: Rourkela railway station porter Sanjay Saw’s long-cherished dream has finally come true. His identical twin sons, Sachin and Sourav, both 20, have secured admission to the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NIT-R), and are now sharing the same hostel room.Sanjay, who lives with his wife and sons at Tingtang Gali in Gopabandhupali, near the railway station, said he had always been determined to provide his children with the best possible education despite his modest income.Sachin, who is 10 minutes older than Sourav, secured 96.7% in the ICSE Class X examination in 2023, while Sourav scored around 95%. Both completed Class XII from the same private English-medium school in 2025, with support from the school management.The brothers began preparing for JEE (Mains) while pursuing Plus Two, taking online coaching. After failing to secure a good rank in their first attempt, they took a year’s break and prepared for the entrance exam again.Sanjay, determined to support their preparation, rented a small room near their one-room house so that the brothers could study without distractions. He also approached a private coaching centre in Rourkela for a concession in coaching fees. Considering their academic record and the family’s financial circumstances, the institute charged them a minimal fee. The brothers underwent coaching for a year and worked hard to crack JEE in 2026.Sachin has secured admission to the BTech programme in electronics & instrumentation, while Sourav has joined the BTech course in industrial design. They were admitted to NIT-R in Aug and are now sharing the same hostel room.“In our first attempt, we could not secure a good rank and therefore, we had taken a drop. With dedicated private coaching, we cracked the entrance in 2026. The credit for our success goes to our parents, particularly our father, who worked very hard for our studies,” Sourav said.Echoing his brother, Sachin said, “The credit for our success goes to our parents. I am happy that both of us have got admission to NIT, Rourkela.”For Sanjay, seeing his sons at NIT-R is fulfilment of a dream he nurtured while working at the railway station. “While working at Rourkela railway station as a porter, I remember seeing students of NITR boarding trains and getting off them. I used to dream about when my sons would study at NITR. My dream has been fulfilled with God’s blessings,” he said.NIT-R registrar Rohan Dhiman assured that the institute would extend all possible support to the brothers during their studies.“Based on the income certificate of the father of these two students, their tuition fee was waived off for the first semester. For the remaining semesters also, their tuition fees will be waived off after they produce their father’s income certificate.
