Snow brings down temperatures in HP’s upper reaches

Shimla: Parts of Kinnaur and Spiti received snowfall on Sunday, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures across Himachal Pradesh’s upper reaches.Kinnaur’s higher areas, including Chitkul and Nako, received light snowfall, while lower areas witnessed rain. The snowfall began Saturday night and continued on Sunday.In the Spiti Valley, Kaza and Chicham recorded light snowfall. Rain also continued in lower Kinnaur for nearly 24 hours, with temperatures falling across the district.Rampur Bushahr, upper Shimla and Kullu’s Outer Seraj also received rain on Sunday.National Highway 305 was blocked near Tapri in Kinnaur due to mud flow, triggering a huge traffic jam. A car also got stuck in the mudflow.An official said restoration work had started. However, the road remained disrupted till the filing of this report.Traffic on the Reckong Peo-Kaza road was also disrupted at Maling Nala near Nako after continuous rockfall. Vehicles were halted as falling rocks made the stretch unsafe for movement.According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 61 roads remained blocked across the state on Sunday. Twenty-five roads remained shut for vehicular traffic in Lahaul-Spiti, followed by 19 in Mandi, six each in Kangra and Kullu, two in Sirmaur and one in Shimla district.In the Spiti sub-division, 24 roads were blocked due to the snowfall on Sunday.Pilgrims rescued (BOX)Over two dozen people, including 16 pilgrims, porters and guides, were rescued from the Kinnaur Kailash route after being stranded near Ganesh Park in Kinnaur due to heavy snowfall and icy winds. The weather suddenly deteriorated in the higher reaches, making further movement impossible.
