Five held for posing as cops, targeting motorists in Rohtas

Sasaram: Police on Saturday night arrested five members of a gang accused of posing as police personnel and targeting motorists for robbery and extortion on NH-19. Police recovered two country-made pistols, a police sign board, live cartridges, three mobile phones and an SUV from their possession.According to Sasaram SDPO V Kumar, a tip-off was received around 8 pm on Saturday that a group of suspicious persons had assembled near a fuel station along the highway in an SUV and were allegedly planning a robbery. A special team was subsequently constituted under the leadership of Sasaram-1 SDPO to verify the information and take action.The police team intercepted the vehicle and detained five persons. One of them was allegedly wearing a police inspector’s uniform, another was dressed as a Bihar Police commando, while the remaining three were in civilian clothes. Police said the man wearing a police uniform identified himself as Rajnish Singh, but later he gave his name as Ranjit Singh. The suspects were asked to produce identity cards, but their inability to provide valid identification raised suspicion. Police subsequently arrested all five and seized the vehicle and other items.Police said the SUV was carrying a fake registration number, while another registration number belonging to Uttar Pradesh was also found inside the vehicle. The arrested persons have been identified as Praveen Singh (36) of Konar in Shiv Sagar; Divakar Kumar Singh alias Divakar Maurya (34) of Amav in Kaimur; Birendra Kumar (35) of Bastalwa in Kudra; Ishrar Alam (38) of Bairibandh in Karghar; and Rajnish Kumar (24) of Chhitaratand in Chenari.A case has been registered at Shiv Sagar police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act. Police said the criminal antecedents of two of the arrested accused have also been found and further investigation is underway.In a separate operation, Kaimur police have arrested three persons allegedly involved in a gang accused of snatching cash and gold chains from passers-by.
