Opposition parties burn CEC Gyanesh Kumar effigy in Amritsar over SIR exercise

AMRITSAR: Leaders and workers of several opposition parties on Wednesday staged a protest at Putlighar here and burnt an effigy of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over their objections to the ongoing electoral revision exercise.The protest was organised by leaders and workers of the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), RMP and other parties. Raising slogans against the Chief Election Commissioner, the protesters alleged that the electoral process was being compromised and demanded Kumar’s immediate resignation.Speaking on the occasion, Rattan Singh Randhawa said that they sought restoration of votes allegedly deleted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and demanded action against those responsible.Randhawa alleged that the exercise could disenfranchise large numbers of voters.
