In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake on the Nintendo Switch 2, rupees serve as the game’s main form of currency, and all players intending to traverse the land of Hyrule will need them in order to obtain new armor parts, recovery items, magic beans, and weapon ammo over the course of their adventures. In this guide, we’ll demonstrate a few tips and tricks on how to obtain rupees easily and quickly so that you can spend less time farming and more time exploring!
For reference, different rupee colors represent different monetary values. The amounts for each can vary across each Zelda title, so for Ocarina of Time, each color provides the following amount of currency:
The ideal route for obtaining Rupees in as efficient of time as possible would be to perform the methods here in the following order:
Explore Hyrule Field, where you can fight Stalchildren and collect Poes along the way
Catch a few fish from Zora’s Domain, return to Castle Town to sell the fish
Play the Shooting Gallery minigame for any additional Rupees you may require.
Plan, optimize, and perform these tricks accordingly, and you’re bound to have enough income to max out even the biggest of the game’s wallets before you reach adulthood. Just… try not to spend all those Rupees in one place.
During your adventure, you have the ability to capture bugs and fish within bottles. While you will need specific creatures to earn specific collectibles, namely Gold Skulltulas for bugs and pieces of Heart for fish, you may always sell any excess creatures to a man in Castle Town. He’s located at the back of the town near a staircase, and he’ll reliably pay you 30 rupees for each fish sold. You can then repeat the pattern of catching fish and selling them to this man and swiftly garner a plentiful amount of rupees early in the game. Plus, you can get even more rupees more quickly if you have multiple bottles for fishing.
Castle Town provides another method for garnering money. There is a room full of pots and crates, and breaking each of the objects in the room will usually yield a few dozen rupees for the effort. You can then exit the room, and after some time, the pots will reappear, which you can then break again for additional Rupees. As such, you can simply wreck everything, gather the rupees, leave, explore Hyrule for a bit, and whenever you revisit Castle Town later on, enter again to easily get about 30-40 rupees per minute. The main upside of this Rupee-earning strategy is that you don't need any extra resources or even any gameplay skills. Just let loose and smash all the pottery!
The Shooting Gallery in Castle Town provides another method of obtaining Rupees that is more fun and simplistic. The only downside is that you’ll have to spend money to make money with this method. It costs 10 Rupees to play. If your aim is competent, you can easily clear this minigame and earn a payout of 30 Rupees. You can use the Gyro controls to make this minigame a breeze and thus earn a profit of 20 Rupees per minute. You can replay this minigame as actively as you’d like, so you don’t need to wait around for anything to respawn. Enjoy the minigame, and enjoy the payouts!
At night and while Link is still a child, Stalchildren will spawn in Hyrule Field. You can battle them and sometimes earn Rupees for your victories. The more Stalchildren you defeat, the larger they’ll appear. And if you defeat the larger ones, the rewards will be grander. You can get blue rupees for defeating some of the smaller ones, and you can sometimes get clusters of Red rupees for defeating the bigger ones. If you’re willing to fight these skeletons while the sun is down, then you’re sure to become extra wealthy once dawn arrives.
This is a finite method, yet it still bears many easily-obtainable rupees. After rescuing Epona from Lon Lon Ranch as Adult Link, you’ll have the option to go after Big Poes by jumping over glowing tree branches and fences in Hyrule Field. There are 10 Big Poes in total, and after catching each one’s soul and placing it into an empty bottle, you can sell them to the Poe Collector in Castle Town. He’ll buy them for 30 Rupees per Poe, and after selling the 10th one, he’ll give you 200 Rupees. For more information on acquiring all of Poes, we have a separate guide for that too.
