Welcome to IGN's Guide to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake. After 28 years, Ocarina of Time has been fully remade, and while much of it remains the same, there's plenty of new differences to be found while exploring Hyrule. This walkthrough covers the opening prologue of the game as a young child of the forest named Link is called to adventure.
The story begins with a dream: A child stands before a great castle. A young girl flees past, only to be followed by an imposing man atop a black steed. Elsewhere, the Great Deku Tree that watches over the forest summons a fairy named Navi, and requests that she bring the "child" to meet with him. That child is Link, who is about to take their first steps toward a grand adventure. After Navi wakes Link up from their strange dream, you'll finally be in control. Leave Link's treehouse by heading to the door and pressing the A button.
As Link steps out to view their home of Kokiri Forest, another of the forest children (called Kokiri) named Saria will come running up to call Link over. In the Ocarina of Time Remake, you'll be able to make full use of the free camera by using the right control stick, so be sure to get a good view of the area before heading down the ladder, and speaking to Saria by pressing the A button.
She'll be overjoyed that Link has finally found a fairy companion, and will urge you to head over the Great Deku Tree right away, so don't delay! You can find the entrance to his grove just down the road past a large cave by the water. As you reach the water's edge, you'll find that the Ocarina of Time Remake includes a new feature - a dedicated jump button! Try it out by pressing the X button to leap across the stone platforms to stay dry (if you fall in, just swim to the other side and Link will automatically climb out). However, before you can meet with the Great Deku Tree, a surly Kokiri named Mido will block your path. He's not entirely convinced Link has what it takes to meet with the Great Deku Tree, fairy companion or not. At the very least, you should have the right gear equipped first, like a Sword and Shield.
The first piece of gear you'll need is something to defend yourself with. Luckily, you don't have to look far. Jump back across the water but stick to the right side this time to find a tree house with a Kokiri girl sitting atop the entrance. She'll teach you how to target distant objects by holding ZL. Navi will fly over to the target, allowing you to interact by pressing A, just as if it was right in front of you! Head into the Kokiri Shop and speak with the shopkeeper. He's low on supplies, but he does have a Kokiri Shield in stock. However, he's not giving it away for free, and you'll need to pick up 40 Rupees if you want to buy it. The good news is that the forest is teeming with hidden treasure, if you know where to look:
Get started by looking in the corner alcove of the shop to find a Blue Rupee - worth 5 Rupees!
Next, head across the water and look below a small waterfall to spot another shimmering Blue Rupee in the water. Swim over to it and hold A to dive under for a few short seconds and grab it.
Over to the south of the entrance to the Great Deku Tree, you can enter the House of the Twins to find a girl singing about the different colors of Rupees and their worth. Just outside, look for some small red pots to pick up by pressing A and toss with ZR to find another Blue Rupee.
Heading west from the Kokiri Shop, you can reach the other side of the stream with more rocks to jump over, and you can find one Blue Rupee on a rock, and another in the water just below.
Just past the water, you'll find Mido's House with another Kokiri struggling to lift rocks (which you can help with to find more items). Inside, Mido has helpfully left several Treasure Chests you can open to help yourself to a total of 16 Rupees. I'm sure he won't mind!
Rupees found out in the open or in chests only appear once, but any found in plants, rocks, pots, or from defeating enemies can always be uncovered when you return to the area!
Once you have the funds, return to the Kokiri Shop and purchase the Deku Shield! You can also buy some Deku Sticks and Nuts if you want, but you'll be able to find them through other means soon enough. You can also talk to the girl in the shop who will give you some pointers about raising your shield when targeting enemies while holding ZL.
Now that you can properly defend yourself, you'll also need a way to defeat threats, which means getting yourself a sword. If you talk to the kid outside Mido's House in the northwest, he'll point you toward the Training Grounds up the hill to the south across from the house.
While you're up here, you should also check out the House of the Three Brothers nearby to learn some important tips about the menu, map, and using items like Deku Sticks and Deku Nuts.
Enter the training grounds and speak with the Kokiri boy to get a crash course in moving while targeting enemies. Using the scarecrow dummies, try out strafing, hopping, and backflipping all while targeting your "opponent". Do this, and he will reveal the secret location of the Kokiri Sword, which happens to be right through a nearby tunnel. Head to the wall and press A near the tunnel entrance to crawl down through to the other side. Here you'll find the "Kokiri Trial" which will task you with getting past the hazards to claim your prize. The hazard takes the form of a large rolling rock, traveling in the counter-clockwise circle around a tall central platform with a chest on top. Once the large rock rolls past, sprint after it by rolling with A and then holding down A to move quickly. There are a few extra Blue Rupees hiding in alcoves you can use to safely catch your breath until the rock rolls past again. Make your way to the south side, and you'll find a ladder leading up to a higher platform.
From here, you'll be able to double back and jump across to the central platform by pressing X, and you'll reach a large Treasure Chest holding the Kokiri Sword!
With the sword in hand, Link can now fend off threats with a swipe by pressing the X button -- but that's not all it's good for. You'll find that Link makes a pretty decent gardener, and you can use the sword to cut away nearby bushes and tall grass with his new sword, and can often reveal items like Green Rupees, Hearts, and other items. If you haven't already purchased the shield, consider grabbing any extra needed funds by cutting the grass! Hop down after the boulder passes and crawl back through the tunnel back to the Training Grounds. the Kokiri boy here will be excited at your new find, and offer to teach you his ultimate move: The Jump Attack. When targeting a foe with ZL, you can press X to jump, and then Y to attack in midair to perform this mighty move, which deals double the damage of a normal swing.
Beyond this special move, it's worth noting that Link can perform sword swings that can slash left or right depending on which direction your strafing while attacking, and can also make forward stab thrusts if you swing while moving toward your target.
Just like in other Zelda games, Link can also perform his famous Spin Attack by holding the attack button down (which you can even do after an initial swing) and then release the A button after a brief delay where he holds his sword back, to damage foes all around him -- though currently your range is fairly short.
Now that Link is properly geared out to face any threats you may come across, head back to Mido and show off your new goods to leave him speechless, and he'll reluctantly step aside to allow you audience with the Great Deku Tree. As you head through the tunnel, you'll encounter your first real enemy: A Deku Baba. This angry plant will shoot straight up, but thankfully leaves itself very vulnerable to attack, though it can wobble around and damage you if you draw too close for an extended period. Target it with ZL, then slash with your sword to cut its stem, and you'll be awarded with the Deku Stick! These items can be used as breakable weapons in a pinch, but can also help light up areas by transferring fire between torches.
Take out the other two Deku Babas blocking the way forward, and at last you'll have your audience with the Great Deku Tree. It seems your adventure will be leading you to some unexpected places, including Beneath the Deku Tree itself!
