This guide covers the Heart Piece locations in the The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time Remake. Just like the original game, there are a total of 36 Pieces of Heart, though several of the locations of these have changed. Every time you gather four Pieces of Heart you will get a Heart Container, which adds another Heart to your total Health bar.
Find all of the heart pieces to add nine Heart Containers to your total Health. The remaining Heart Containers come from beating bosses. Below, you'll find the complete list of all 36 Pieces of heart, which are numbered in addition to the region you can find them in -- some while you're in the child era, others in the adult era (and some in both).
One of the first Pieces of Heart that you can claim will come soon after you meet Princess Zelda for the first time, and return to Hyrule Field. Head south to Lon Lon Ranch, where there's a large field full of horses. From the large field, head to the large crumbled tower in the far southwest corner of the ranch and head inside. There's a storage area here with nine milk crates, and a large metal grate at the end. Pull out the closest crates to empty two spots in the middle column, and then pull back the crate in the middle against the wall. This will reveal a small gap you can crawl through.
On the other side you'll find your first Piece of Heart! For every four pieces you find, you'll earn a new Heart Container to add to your total health!
Another early Heart Piece is found in Kakariko Village, off to the northeast of Hyrule. Once there, you can head up the stairs to the left and climb to the roof of a building near a large wooden tower, where you can spot a man on another rooftop nearby who has something for you, but getting to him can be tricky.
Grab a nearby Cucco that's wandering around the path up to Death Mountain, and run over to the Windmill. From here, you can jump over the fence to the other side, where a ladder leads up to a hilltop behind the large windmill. When you grab the Cucco on top of the hill behind the Windmill, make sure to leap over to the roof of Granny's Potion Shop (the blue rooftop). Carefully move to the other side of the blue roof closer to the wooden tower, and you'll find the man lounging on the lower roof section. He'll be so happy someone's come to see him that he'll give you a Piece of Heart!
Piece of Heart 3 - Kakariko Village Graveyard
Beyond the village of Kakariko past the Windmill is the town's graveyard. By night, Dampe the Gravedigger will wander the grounds, and offer Dampe's Heart-Poundin' Grave-Diggin' Tour!
Request to play Dante's Grave-digging tour, and he'll reveal several dirt mounds all across the graveyard area. You can guide him to any of the dirt mounds and interact with them to pay Dampe 10 Rupees to dig in the spot. Whatever comes up is yours to keep... provided something is actually buried there. Sometimes you'll get a few Rupees, other times nothing at all, but keep at it until he detects something heavy and asks for another 5 Rupees to keep at it, as it contains his special prize: A Piece of Heart!
Piece of Heart 4 - Kakariko Village Graveyard
Finally, pull back the grave at the far southern edge of this same row below the royal tomb, and you'll find one more tomb to drop into. No enemies here, but a large Treasure Chest holds a Piece of Heart -- which should be the fourth one you've found to grant you an extra Heart Container!
When exploring Hyrule Castle Town, you'll run into a lady who's constantly doting on her little white dog named Richard. However, once you've opened up the gate leading to Death Mountain, you can return to the Castle Town to find out from her that Richard has gone missing, and you'll be tasked to find him amid all the other stray dogs that descend upon Castle Town in the evening.
To find Richard, head down the alleyway past the Bomchu Shop near where the lady and her dog live. Richard should appear around the back corner, not far from the Treasure Chest Shop (there are a few other white dogs in other parts of the alley, so you may grab the wrong one and need a do-over).
Interact with the dog to get it to follow you, then return to the lady. If it's the right dog, she'll be overjoyed and award you a Piece of Heart!
Once you reach Goron City, you'll be tasked to find a song to cheer up Darunia, which you can get by finding Saria in the Lost Wood's Sacred Grove. Once you have it, head back into the Lost Woods, and from the starting point, take a left. This leads to a small grove with a friendly Skull Kid playing on his flute. Step onto the smaller trunk, and play Saria's Song with him. Any friend of Saria's is a friend of his, and he'll reward this new bond with a new Piece of Heart for you!
Once Saria has given you the Fairy Ocarina, you can enter the Lost Woods atop Kokiri Forest. From the entrance to the wooded maze, follow the music right to the east. This next area has a lower pathway where two more Skull Kids are playing their instruments on large tree trunks. Join with them using your Ocarina, and they'll start a game of "follow the tune". You'll need to repeat a randomized tune of notes that build from 3-5, and if you can follow along, they'll pass you a Blue Rupee.
Try it again, and this time you'll have to follow the notes that build from 4-6. If you're having trouble as they hide which notes you need to memorize, look for the placement on the prompt to clue you in on which notes you need to remember. Complete this task, and you'll earn a Red Rupee worth 20.
Play their game one last time for a super hard version of following notes that build from 6 to 8. If you can keep following along, you'll earn the ultimate prize: a new Piece of Heart!
In Goron City, there's a large Goron-shaped pot in the middle of the city at its bottom level. After meeting Darunia, you can light the torches around the pot using a lit Deku Stick, and the pot will begin to spin.
Once you have the Bomb Bag from Dodongo Cavern, return to the spinning pot, and look for a plank that puts you close to the top of the pot. You'll want to toss a bomb into the spinning pot, ideally when the "Happy" face is facing you. The pot will spin wildly, and depending on the face it stops spinning on, you can earn different prizes. If it lands on the "Happy" face, you'll get a Piece of Heart!
Piece of Heart 9 - Death Mountain Crater
Once you're able to reach the summit of Death Mountain after completing Dodongo Cavern, there's two Pieces of Heart hiding in the extreme heat of the Death Mountain Crater. Be warned, after around 4 seconds, you'll start to take a quarter heart damage every second, so you'll need to move quickly.
From the entrance, quickly dash down the slope and then to the right between two large rocks, and look for some mesh along the ground leading to a wall you can climb down the face of the inner volcano. Just below these two mesh spots is a Piece of Heart hiding in an alcove (which will also reset the time it takes to start taking damage), just be sure to quickly leap back up the mesh after claiming it!
Piece of Heart 10 - Death Mountain Crater
Sprint down the slope from the entrance to the northwest to spot a low platform, near a broken bridge with a large grey rock in the way making it impossible to cross. What you can do from this side is find a Business Deku Scrub here -- of all places! He'll sell you another Piece of Heart for 100 Rupees. It's a steep price, but well worth it (and will reset the time until you start taking damage).
Once you're able to reach the summit of Death Mountain after completing Dodongo Cavern, you can climb up the Death Mountain Trail to reach the top. Here, you'll find Kaepora Gaebora the Owl. He'll offer to give you a ride down to Kakariko Village, which you should accept and enjoy the flight!
Kaepora Gaebora will drop you off on top of Impa's House of all places, but don't jump off just yet. Carefully move to the back of the rooftop, and look down for a small cow pen that's been hidden behind sealed gates. On the roof of the pen is a Piece of Heart that can't be accessed except from this roof, so hop down onto the lower roof of the cow pen and claim your prize!
If exploring the area as an adult, you can use your Hookshot gained from the Graveyard on the bright green vines to the left of Impa's House to get over the fence.
Once you've completed the Dodongo's Cavern dungeons and open up supply lines from the Gorons back to the townsfolk of Hyrule Castle Town, you'll have access to the Bombchu Bowling Alley near the center of town. For the cost of 10 Rupees, you can try your hand at navigating Bombchus into a target on a far wall, avoiding obstacles and banking them off walls to reach 3 goals with 10 Bombchus. It'll take a bit of practice and angling, but there are some wonderful prizes to earn as you unlock harder courses:
For the harder courses, we recommend looking for a way to angle the Bombchus off the wall at angles to reach the back, or look for the small gaps between obstacles to drive a straight path through threading anything in the way -- timing is crucial!
Once you have access to a bomb bag, you can begin to explore Zora River, and partway up the river path you may notice a Piece of Heart sitting on a high ledge with no way to reach it. Climb up the path leading further east, and look back where the river splits down to the southwest. There's also a high ledge at the back of the large island in the middle of the river. You can't swim up to it... but you can float to it.
Return back to the sealed gate by the start of the river and grab the lone Cucco. With all the enemies nearby defeated, you can safely escort it, throwing it over the last ledge before you climb up, and then use it to float down to the high platform, and use the vines to climb up to the top of the island.
Looking north, you can spot a high platform over the singing frogs that hold a Piece of Heart, but no way to reach it. Instead, head to the southern part of the island and across to a high ledge that hides a second Grotto entrance. In here, you'll find another Cucco. Grab the Cucco and take him with you as you exit the Grotto, and then cross to the narrow platform where a Sheikah Stone is. From here, leap down to the Heart Piece using the second Cucco to float across!
Once you have access to a bomb bag, you can begin to explore Zora River, and you'll find a Cucco wandering around on the other side of a sealed gate past a Bean Seller. Be sure to take the Cucco with you as you continue up the Zora River trail to where the entrance to Zora's Domain is. There are several crossing platforms here. On the other side, a high ledge overlooks a second Piece of Heart on a tiny platform to the northwest. Use that Cucco you held earlier to do one more floating jump across the falls to reach it.
Upon reaching Zora's Domain, there's a secret Piece of Heart you can reveal by solving a little puzzle. Head up to the Audience Chamber in front of King Zora, and look around, notin the two lit torches at the entrance to the audience chamber. You can use a Deku Stick and run down the steps to light torches along the way.
Keep running between torches and then stowing your stick before taking it out again as you head down to the bottom level, and follow a path behind the large waterfall to find two final braziers to light, which will reveal a Treasure Chest in the middle holding a Piece of Heart.
When in Lake Hylia, you can visit a small area across the water from the two scarecrows to find Lake Hylia's own Fishing Pond. It's here you can rent out a fishing rod and try your luck and land a big haul! The set-up is pretty straightforward: try to find a big-looking fish in the middle of the pod, cast your line near it, then gently pull back with ZR and wiggle your line to get its attention.
When it does, you'll need to alternate holding left or right -- whichever direction the fish is trying to flee in, until it gets tired and stops for a moment. When it does, hold down ZR and keep reeling in until it resumes its frantic escape. Keep it up, and the fish will be yours.
The owner is pretty good at judging the size at a distance, and if you bring him anything over 40cm, and you'll be awarded a Piece of Heart!
Though much of Gerudo Valley is inaccessible to Child Link, there are still two Pieces of Heart you can locate fairly early (or come back as an adult). Though the bridge gate is closed, there are sections of the valley wall you can jump to, and along the opposite side you can spy a large Treasure Chest. The gap is normally too big to cross, but there happens to be a Cucco nearby that you can grab and float across the valley to the other side. Open the Treasure Chest, and you'll find a Piece of Heart inside!
Though much of Gerudo Valley is inaccessible to Child Link, there are still two Pieces of Heart you can locate fairly early (or come back as an adult). Look for a Cucco wandering near the bridge, and use it to carefully float down to the large alcove at the bottom of the valley with the raging river below that feeds out to Lake Hylia. Jump off with the Cucco and slowly float down to a large alcove along the waterline.
Head up this large alcove path up north toward the giant waterfall. You'll find there's actually a path behind the waterfall, and you can climb it to reach another Piece of Heart!
Piece of Heart 19 - Kakariko Village Graveyard
When you're still Child Link, be sure to purchase some Magic Beans from the Bean Seller in Zora River. Then make your way back to the Graveyard behind Kakariko Village, and look for some soft soil by a dead tree on the north side of the graveyard, just below some raised ruins with a Piece of Heart just out of reach. When you return as an adult, the beans will have sprouted into a floating flower, and it will take you directly to the Piece of Heart!
Returning to the Kakariko Village Graveyard as an adult, you'll find a new grave by the magic bean plant, where Dampe the Grave-digger's spirit lies, and has built out a race course for you to run. Keep up with him to the finish, and he'll award you the Hookshot. Since you can't go back the way you came, use the Hookshot to zip to a far ledge, and take the passage up to the Windmill. You'll be able to jump across the windmill's moving parts to find a Piece of Heart on a high ledge!
Piece of Heart 21 - Kakariko Village Graveyard
After you've run Dampe's race in the Graveyard as Adult Link, you'll be able to revisit Dampe and try again. He'll offer a second wager after you've claimed the Hookshot - beat the race in under a minute, and he'll have a new reward for you. To win, keep an eye on the flames he shoots out, make sure to keep sprinting at all times, and memorize the route you need to take. If you're still having trouble, come back with the Longshot from the Water Temple to zip up the last staircase and shave off precious seconds, and you'll win a Piece of Heart.
To get this Piece of Heart, you need to first be diligent as Child Link in purchasing some Magic Beans and planting them in the right spots. Head to Lake Hylia, and plant some Magic Beans in a patch of soft soil just outside the Observatory. Return when you're an adult, and the beans will have sprouted into a magic floating plant. Let it take you all the way up to the top of the observatory, and climb up the ladder to find a Piece of Heart here.
There are two Pieces of Heart hiding in Hyrule Field, but both of them will require a bit of time traveling to reveal their secrets. If you look just to the east of Hyrule Castle Town's gate along the moat, you can find a cracked stone that you can bomb revealing a Grotto entrance. Inside is a peculiar Deku Business Scrub, who won't trade with you unless you know the password.
To get the password, you'll have to become Adult Link, and return to the Grotto entrance. Nearby on a tree, you can now find fairy writing which has the password. Unfortunately, as an adult, the Scrub has already sold his wares. Once you complete the Forest Temple, return to being Child Link, and use the password on the Scrub to buy his Piece of Heart for 100 Rupees!
There are two Pieces of Heart hiding in Hyrule Field, but both of them will require a bit of time traveling to reveal their secrets. If you travel toward the entrance to Gerudo Valley, look under a large rock outcropping and you'll find a small Treasure Chest. However, as a child, there seems to be no way to unlock it.
To find a way to unlock it, you'll need to become Adult Link. Return to inspect the Treasure Chest in the future to find fairy writing nearby, urging you specifically to take what's inside before someone else does. Unfortunately, someone else already has. After completing the Forest Temple, you can then return to being Child Link, and head back to find the Treasure Chest can now be opened to nab a Piece of Heart!
After using the Ocarina to learn the Song of Storms from the Windmill Man as Adult Link in Kakariko Village, return to the past. As Young Link, head to Zora River to speak with the frogs, and play the Song of Storms. They'll be delighted for the rainfall, and award you a Piece of Heart.
After you've played all six non-teleport songs for the group of frogs along Zora River (Zelda's Lullaby, Epona's Song, Saria's Song, Sun's Song, Song of Time and the Song of Storms), speak with the grop again to play a minigame with them. They'll ask you to play the right tune matching the fly hovering over each frog. Play the sequence quickly, and you can earn a Piece of Heart:
To get this Piece of Heart, you'll need to have done your job hunting down Gold Skulltulas across Hyrule. You can follow our guide to claim the tokens as you progress through the game, which should get you to the 50 mark around the time you complete the Forest Temple. Once you have at least 50 Gold Skulltula Tokens, return to the Cursed Spider House in Kakariko Village, and talk to the father to get your reward.
Piece of Heart 28 - Death Mountain Trail
To get this Piece of Heart, you need to first be diligent as Child Link in purchasing some Magic Beans and planting them in the right spots. Head up the Death Mountain Trail and look at the entrance to Dodongo Cavern for a patch of soft soil you can plant the seeds in. Return when you're an adult, and the beans will have sprouted into a magic floating plant. Let it take you all the way up to the top of a high ledge where a Piece of Heart has been taunting you.
Piece of Heart 29 - Death Mountain Crater
This Piece of Heart resides in the burning heart of Death Mountain, atop one of the large rocky pillars in the active volcano. To get this Piece of Heart, you need to first be diligent as Child Link in purchasing some Magic Beans and planting them in the right spots -- but you can't reach this spot until you unlock access to the Fire Temple as Adult Link. Once you do, return back to being Child Link and play the Bolero of Fire to warp outside the temple. Quickly plant the Magic Beans before you light on fire, and then warp back to the Temple of Time. Return as Adult Link, and you'll find a magic floating plant to take you up to the Piece of Heart.
This Piece of Heart can be found in the frozen remains of Zora Fountain, where Lord Jabu-Jabu used to reside. When you return as an adult, the entire area will have become an ice field. Carefully hop across the icebergs in the water to reach a Piece of Heart on the northeast corner of the frigid lake.
Requires: Iron Boots, Zora Tunic (Recommended)
This Piece of Heart can be found in the frozen remains of Zora Fountain, and once you have the Iron Boots from the nearby Ice Cavern, you can locate the Heart Piece. Simply equip the boots and dive down to the bottom of this lake to find it among a ring of Green Rupees. You'll start taking damage as you run out of air, so it's recommended to unfreeze King Zora first so you can breathe underwater with the Zora Tunic.
This Piece of Heart is offered by the scientist who lives in the Observatory at Lake Hylia, though you won't be able to claim this prize until you're an adult. He'll challenge you to reach the bottom of the pool in his lab, which requires you diving a total of 9 meters. To do this, you'll need to catch the biggest fish in the nearby Lake Hylia fishing pond as an adult, and get the Golden Scale as a reward. Then dive down into the pool and talk to the scientist to get your reward.
After learning the Song of Storms from the Windmill Man as an adult, and playing it for him as a child, you'll be able to access the mini-dungeon at the Bottom of the Well, where you can uncover the Lenses of Truth item to see the contents of chests before you open them. Use this by returning to Castle Town and playing the Treasure Chest game, using the Lenses to locate all the keys to the next room to claim your prize -- a Piece of Heart.
There are two Pieces of Heart that can be claimed in the Gerudo Fortress area, and while you don't need to get the Gerudo people on your side to claim this first one, it's recommended to do so to make reaching it easier.
From the northern rooftops, head south to climb up a crumbling slope to the top southeastern roofs before doubling back to the north. When you find a gap too large to cross, play the Scarecrow's Song to summon Pierre and hookshot across to him. Look just to the left, and you'll find a Treasure Chest holding a Piece of Heart.
There are two Pieces of Heart that can be claimed in the Gerudo Fortress area, and this one will require you first completing the area to earn back the trust of the Gerudo people, allowing you to explore the area. Once you can, summon Epona and travel to the archery course on the southeast part of town. You'll need to score over 750 Points by shooting both the pots and large targets to earn a Piece of Heart as your prize.
Piece of Heart 36 - Evil Desert Colossus
The last Piece of Heart can be found far out in the desert past the Gerudo Fortress, at the site of the Spirit Temple at the Evil Desert Colossus. Once you reach this spot as Adult Link, you'll be unable to travel very far, and Sheik will teach you a melody to warp here as Child Link. When you do, bring along some Magic Beans to plant in some soft soil, then return as Adult Link to ride the floating plant over a stone archway with the Piece of Heart on top.
