Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes addressed the organisation's decision to sign kicker Justin Tucker.
Tucker spent the first 10 weeks of the 2025 NFL season under suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy over allegations of inappropriate conduct during massage sessions between 2012 and 2016.
While the Baltimore Ravens ended Tucker's 12-year tenure with the franchise, and he has remained unsigned since, the Chiefs have taken the bold step of offering Tucker a roster spot by adding him to their practice squad.
Patrick Mahomes reacts to Chiefs signing Justin Tucker
Mahomes spoke about the Chiefs signing Tucker after practice on October 28, sharing a pretty flat and professional response.
"Yeah, we have a lot of people that are added in and out. I try not to get too high or too low on anything. I know Veach does a great job bringing great players in. But for me, it is about the Denver Broncos, moving on, and continuing to get better because we have a lot of stuff to clean up."
With Mahomes giving a tepid reaction to Tucker's signing, fans are already pointing out how this is not like the 31-year-old QB and how his actual feelings for the kicker are shining through in his responses.
"He hates him; never saw Mahomes not being excited for someone new," observed one fan .
"I've never seen Patrick Mahomes NOT say 'excited to have him on our football team' until they signed Justin Tucker. This is Patrick Mahomes 'I hate that dude' speak and body language," said another fan, thinking Mahomes is unhappy with this signing .
"Pat's been working on his poker face. Respect," said a fan .
"Yeah, he don't mess with him," said another fan .
"Omg he is not happy about this!! He has never had this middle-ground reaction about someone coming in. Please, the Chiefs are an unserious organisation," criticised one fan .
The Chiefs signed Tucker because of the struggles starting kicker Harrison Butker has faced, going 11-for-16 on field goal attempts this season. Tucker's career record is 417-for-468 on field goal attempts, for a total conversion percentage of 89.1%, which makes him an appealing option.
The Chiefs are 5-1 this NFL season and among the leading Super Bowl contenders, so this move is a high-risk gamble to potentially upgrade the production they are getting at kicker, even if it means making a very unpopular signing.
