Aaron Rodgers, Mike McCarthy Address Viral Video of Heated Exchange in Steelers' Loss to Browns
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike McCarthy says he regrets his heated exchange with quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the first quarter of Thursday's 27-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike McCarthy says he regrets his heated exchange with quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the first quarter of Thursday's 27-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
"What's said on the field, the way I grew up in this game, usually stays on the field. That's not the case today. I understand that," McCarthy said after the game. "Any negative communication on my part, I wish I wouldn't use those words."
The incident took place when the game was still scoreless in the first quarter as Rodgers yelled toward the sideline while apparently waiting for a play call on 1st and 10.
Rodgers said after the game the noise at Huntington Bank Stadium had impacted his ability to communicate with his coaches.
"It was loud," Rodgers said. "So some of the calls, it was hard to hear, for sure."
The Steelers dropped to 2-2, which allowed the Browns (3-1) to climb to the top of the AFC North ahead of Sunday's slate.
McCarthy wasn't the only person Rodgers seemed frustrated with during Thursday night's loss.
The NFL on Prime broadcast also showed a video of Rodgers sharing a heated exchange with his wide receivers.
The opening drive on which McCarthy and Rodgers had their confrontation ultimately ended in a touchdown, although it took 17 plays and almost 10 minutes on the field.
"First drive was hectic... I was talking faster than normal," McCarthy said . "I think once we settled in after that drive, which resulted in a touchdown, I thought the communication was solid."
The Steelers had less success on offense following that opening score. Rodgers threw an interception on the next possession, and the next drive to get into scoring range ended with a missed field goal.
Rodgers found Pat Freiermuth in the end zone and converted a two-point try with less than two minutes remaining to pull the Steelers back even, but the Browns pulled ahead on their final drive thanks to a 56-yard field goal from Andre Szmyt.
An attempt at a Hail Mary from Rodgers to Roman Wilson was intercepted to seal the Browns' win.
The Steelers were ultimately outgained 372-361 as Rodgers finished the game 22-of-40 for 299 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Rodgers said ahead of the Week 4 matchup he felt his team's offense had started from zero this offseason, but there are "some vibes that start to flow a little bit if you put together a couple good performances in a row" (h/t Steelers.com's Mike Prisuta ).
The Steelers have so far been unable to accomplish that by putting together consecutive wins. They'll look to get back in the win column in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts.
