Sean McVay Takes Blame for Rams' Loss to 49ers, Calls Season-Opening Blowout 'Humbling'

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay placed blame on himself for the team's season-opening 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia.

"I didn't do nearly a good enough job," McVay told reporters after the game (0:06 mark). "This is a humbling day for us. This will define us only if we allow it to and today was one of those days. I always look inside out, I didn't do a good enough job getting us ready to go. There were some opportunities where maybe the game could've flipped, but they deserve the win. They were ready to go. We'll look at it, we'll see where we can improve and be better moving forward. This is a good, humbling day."

"Sometimes sports can humble you and today was one of those days," he added (0:47 mark). "I make no excuses."

The Rams took an early 7-3 lead, but couldn't keep up with San Francisco's offense as they were held scoreless in the second half of the contest.

Matthew Stafford struggled in Los Angeles' defeat, finishing 15-of-25 for 155 yards and one interception.

Stafford's 61.2 passer rating was worse than all 17 regular-season appearances that he made during his MVP-winning 2025 campaign.

The Rams repeatedly failed to move the chains against the 49ers, as they converted just two of nine opportunities on third down. They also converted just one of three chances on fourth down, which included a turnover on downs at San Francisco's one-yard line in the third quarter.

Los Angeles added reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and star cornerback Trent McDuffie during the offseason, but couldn't slow down the 49ers' offense.

San Francisco racked up 379 total yards, averaging 5.9 yards per play. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy went 25-of-34 for 205 yards and three touchdowns despite getting picked off once.

Meanwhile, Garrett failed to record a tackle or sack in his Rams debut.

McVay will now look to help his team get back on track during a Week 2 matchup with the New York Giants on Sept. 21.
