Sean McVay delivers ‘humbling’ verdict after Rams’ 49ers debacle

Sean McVay had no interest in blaming the Rams ' travel itinerary for their 27-7 debacle against the 49ers .

"Sometimes sports can humble you, and today was one of those days." McVay said, "I make no excuses."

The lopsided defeat immediately sparked online speculation that Los Angeles ' compressed travel schedule contributed to its lethargic performance. The Rams landed in Melbourne approximately 24 hours before kickoff, while San Francisco spent a week acclimating.

McVay would not entertain that explanation.

The numbers illustrated how thoroughly a Rams team touted as a Super Bowl favorite and "super team" was outplayed.

Los Angeles' seven points were its fewest in any game started by Matthew Stafford . The 20-point margin represented the Rams' first double-digit loss since 2024.

Myles Garrett finished without a tackle or quarterback hit for just the fourth time in his career. That disappearance was particularly jarring because Garrett generated at least one pressure in all 66 regular-season games he played from 2022-25.

The physical cost also mounted. Kam Curl departed with an ankle injury, while Davis Allen and Nate Landman also left the game.

The Rams arrived carrying an offseason's worth of championship expectations. They left with questions about their travel, conditioning and preparation — but McVay permitted only one explanation.
