The NFL suspended San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York for six games on Friday, and football fans immediately encountered a problem usually reserved for fantasy leagues.

What exactly does it mean to suspend the owner?

York was also fined $500,000 for violating the league's Personal Conduct Policy following his August arrest in an Ohio prostitution sting. The punishment sounded hefty on paper, but the internet was much more interested in figuring out what six games on the sidelines actually change for the billionaire who owns the team.

NFL Fans Have Questions About Suspending Jed York

One user on X called the discipline "an absolute pathetic punishment."

Another fan went straight to the logistical issue.

"Literally, what does suspending an owner do?" one fan wrote .

"Suspended? What's he even do during games? He calling plays?" another user on X asked .

"The idea of an owner having to stay home for 2 months as punishment is so funny," Philadelphia Eagles Central's account added .

Tucker D. Franklin had essentially the same question.

"Genuine question, how does an owner being suspended punish them?" Franklin wrote .

York has already stayed away from the 49ers for their first three games, and those absences count toward the six-game suspension. He can return Oct. 20, meaning San Francisco will have played six regular-season games before he is reinstated.

York's $500,000 Fine Draws Plenty of Attention Too

The punishment followed an August arrest in East Palestine, Ohio. York was initially charged with engaging in prostitution before that count was amended to disorderly conduct. He pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools, received credit for one day served in jail, and paid $1,150 in fines.

The NFL had been reviewing the case under its Personal Conduct Policy since August.

Fans certainly noticed the financial math once Friday's punishment became official.

"$500,140 for a Wheat Hill Mobile Home prostitute. Woof, Jed York," Jeff Mueller, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, shared on X.

The league has suspended owners before. The late Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay received the same six-game suspension and $500,000 fine in 2014 after pleading guilty to impaired driving.

York accepted the NFL's punishment and apologized Friday, calling his actions an "inexcusable mistake" while saying he needs to earn back trust.

His full statement read: "Today, the NFL concluded its review, and I accept its decision in full. To my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners, I am deeply sorry. This was an inexcusable mistake and I take full responsibility. What I did does not reflect my values or the man I strive to be for my family.

"While I fell short of the model I want to set for my sons, I now hope to show them the importance of owning up to one's failures, and that even our worst moments teach us to be better. Leading the 49ers is a privilege, and one I don't take lightly. Your trust will have to be earned back over time, and I look forward to that work ahead."

While the league handed down a six-game suspension and a half-million-dollar fine, fans were still unsure how an owner's suspension affects a team.
