The New York Giants already lost Jaxson Dart to injury this season, and there are now injury concerns for another of their quarterbacks.
J.J. McCarthy took a hard hit while running during a play in Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He went to the sidelines at first and attempted to test it with a throw but winced in pain while falling to a knee.
He also slammed his helmet down and then went to the locker room, and the Giants announced he was questionable to return with a hip injury. However, he returned from the locker room and then reentered the game.
The Giants traded for McCarthy in part as a response to Dart's injury, and the Michigan product played well in his immediate game action for the NFC East team.
He threw for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception during the fourth quarter of a game against the New Orleans Saints and earned the start in the ensuing matchup against the Houston Texans.
Despite being on the road against a Texans defense with a number of headline players, McCarthy led the Giants to an overtime victory by throwing for 252 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions.
There was little question after that performance he would be the starter for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, although it did not go as well for him even before the injury.
New York managed just two field goals in the first half and trailed by two points at intermission despite its own defense playing well against the Eagles.
Jameis Winston, who was the quarterback the Giants initially turned to in the aftermath of Dart's injury, entered the game after McCarthy's injury and threw a touchdown to take the lead.
While McCarthy returned, Winston will likely also be the signal-caller the team relies on in the future if there are any more setbacks.
