The Detroit Lions unsurprisingly came away from their clash with the Miami Dolphins as winners on Sunday, and made NFL history in the process.
During their 19-9 win, Jack Fox made an 11-yard pass after faking a punt in the second quarter. It was a trip down memory lane for the Lions punter, who threw for 18 touchdowns during his high school career in Missouri.
A pass from a punter is not a super rare occurrence. That came when his opposite number, Bradley Pinion, repeated the feat in the fourth quarter. He threw an even more impressive 46-yard pass, finding Kaytron Allen in open grass for a 1st & 10.
It's just the second time both punters have completed a pass in an NFL game since 1950, with the last such instance occurring 45 years ago. That was Cowboys vs Lions.
The Dolphins won't be all that thrilled by their part in making NFL history this weekend. They came into Week 9 second from the bottom in the power rankings, only better than the Chargers.
The offense gave Miami very little to work with. Malik Willis finished 52% on his throws for 128 yards and an interception, and he was sacked three times. Caleb Douglas led the receivers with six catches for 70 yards, but he let a fourth-down pass slip through his hands in the final quarter. Miami was flagged 11 times in all.
Sloppy football like that won't get you far against a team as strong as Detroit. Hafley's team is now 1-7.
