Seahawks release veteran player after trade on Tuesday
The Seattle Seahawks have made a roster decision following their Quenton Nelson trade.
The Seattle Seahawks made a major addition to their offensive line on Tuesday, acquiring eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts . The trade gives Seattle an experienced interior blocker as it looks to improve its offense during the second half of the season.
However, bringing Nelson to Seattle has also forced the Seahawks to make a roster adjustment. With a new guard joining the offensive line, the team has decided to move on from one of its younger players, creating a fresh opportunity for the incoming veteran to strengthen the unit.
The Seahawks waived guard Christian Haynes to make room for Nelson on their 53-man roster (h/t ESPN's Adam Schefter).
Seattle selected Haynes in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, with the 81st overall pick, after his college career at UConn.
Haynes' departure comes as Seattle looks to address its interior offensive line. The team had rotated Haynes and rookie Beau Stephens at right guard earlier in the season while Anthony Bradford was sidelined on injured reserve.
The waiver process allows another NFL team to claim Haynes and take over his contract. If no team claims him, he can become a free agent and explore other opportunities.
What Quenton Nelson brings to the Seahawks
Nelson was selected sixth overall by the Colts in the 2018 NFL Draft and quickly established himself as one of the league's leading offensive guards. He has earned eight Pro Bowl selections and three first-team All-Pro honors, making him a significant addition for Seattle.
The Seahawks sent Indianapolis a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick in exchange for Nelson.
The move also addresses an area Seattle has struggled with this season. The Seahawks ranked 21st in pass-block win rate and 27th in run-block win rate. Nelson's experience in both phases could help improve the team's interior blocking and provide better protection for quarterback Sam Darnold.
