Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker is set to be moved from the sidelines to the coaches' booth for the rest of the season, owner and general manager Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday .

"You search for what we can do differently that would give us better results," Jones said on his 84th birthday . "That's the main emphasis that we would spend some, let's say, specific attention to areas. We're going to coach the defense from not on the field, but up above. Parker's going up above.

"You should be looking for ways to adjust and make changes to improve. That's the point of improving from the results we had the last few weeks."

The Cowboys dropped to 2-3 on the season following Thursday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Parker, who was hired in January , has already seen criticism directed his way from the likes of Wink Martindale and Mike Tomlin . Through five weeks the Dallas defense is 31st in the NFL with 395.4 yards allowed per game and has allowed a league-worst 168.4 rushing yards per game.

Thursday's defeat also marked the 12th straight game dating back to last season that Dallas has allowed at least 20 points.

Parker has held himself accountable publicly for the defense's lapses, but in an attempt to provide further assistance the Cowboys are bringing in longtime NFL defensive coordinator Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant .

Parker and Pettine worked together previously when the two were with the Green Bay Packers in 2019.

Jones made sure to say these decisions are not to say that Parker is overwhelmed by the responsibilities, but are a way to help find answers on the defensive side of the ball.

This is the second straight season the Cowboys will move their defensive coordinator from the field to the coaches' booth. Matt Eberflus made the move last season heading into Week 15 .

Eberflus, like Parker, was in his first year in the role. At the time, the Cowboys ranked 31st in points allowed, were giving up 30 points per game, and were 29th in yards allowed per game at 374.9 yards. They ended up losing two out those final three games, allowing an average of 30 points per game.

The Cowboys fired Eberflus following the season.
