Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams "could return sometime in the next several weeks," according to The Ringer's Tom Pelissero .

Williams practiced Friday on a limited basis, with the Bears listing him as questionable in Week 5.

Still, Pelissero suggested Chicago is willing to be patient with his recovery. The NFL insider cited the Bears' next two games (Oct. 18 against the Atlanta Falcons and Oct. 22 against the New England Patriots) as possible occasions for him to be activated.

They'll have a long turnaround between Weeks 7 and 8, 11 days, which would afford Williams more time to recuperate and sharpen up if he needs it.

The third-year signal-caller began his 2026 season with an explosive performance during a 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers, throwing for 269 yards and two touchdowns while adding 65 rushing yards and two more scores.

Unfortunately, Williams suffered a Grade 2 right hamstring strain while he was running for the end zone in the fourth quarter of the Bears' Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings (9-3 loss). Williams fell to the ground on the six-yard line on a non-contact play and was stretchered off the field.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Sept. 27 that the injury could sideline him for "three-to-four weeks."

The Bears selected Williams, a former Oklahoma and USC star, with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He and the Bears broke out in 2025, the first season under head coach Ben Johnson. Chicago won the NFC North and reached the NFC Divisional round thanks in part due to Williams' late-game heroics. He ended up throwing for 3,942 passing yards and 27 touchdowns.

Without Williams, Tyson Bagent is the team's interim starter, and Case Keenum is the backup.

Keenum starred in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles in a 27-7 win after Bagent missed most of practice leading to the game ( concussion protocol ). He finished with 247 passing yards and two touchdowns. Bagent took over the following week and led the Bears to a 23-12 win (268 passing yards).
