After sitting out the entire preseason as part of his continued recovery from a torn ACL, Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes received some good news.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Tuesday that Mahomes has a "pretty good" chance to start the team's season opener against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football .

Mahomes has been an active participant in practice throughout training camp, but it was no surprise that the Chiefs took a cautious approach with his recovery. Still, Reid sounded confident that the two-time NFL MVP will be under center when Kansas City opens the year against a Denver team that claimed the AFC West crown last season, ending its incredible run of nine straight division titles.

"As far as our roster goes, there's a very good chance that Patrick will go ahead and start unless something were to come up here in the next couple days," Reid told reporters . "Most likely he'll be the guy that's out there."

Mahomes tore his ACL last December, but he aggressively attacked his rehab with the goal of being ready for the start of the 2026 campaign. It was the first major injury of his impressive career, but the three-time Super Bowl champion refused to let it slow him down.

The Chiefs acquired quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets earlier this offseason to provide some extra insurance behind Mahomes, but they will surely need their longtime leader to be healthy if they want to return to title contention this year. It sounds like Mahomes is already on the right track, and Kansas City will be ready to start the year with a tough test against Denver.
