Patriots rule RB TreVeyon Henderson out for Wednesday's Super Bowl rematch vs. Seahawks

The New England Patriots have ruled out running back TreVeyon Henderson for Wednesday night's season opener against the Seattle Seahawks .

Henderson has been dealing with an ankle injury throughout the preseason and has been sidelined from practice for two weeks. The move doesn't come as a complete surprise, but the second-year back did travel with New England for the road game, leaving open the possibility of a last-minute change.

With no Henderson, veteran running back Rhamondre Stevenson is expected to see an increased workload against the Seahawks. Stevenson and Henderson were projected to once again share backfield duties, but now Stevenson will be joined in the backfield by third-string RB Corey Kiner .

This will be the first game that Henderson has missed in his career. Last year as a rookie, he played in all 17 games and finished the year with 911 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Henderson added 221 yards and another touchdown on 35 receptions.

Seattle stifled New England's run game in the Super Bowl, as neither Henderson now Stevenson could get much going on the ground.

Henderson had six carries for 19 yards, while Stevenson picked up 23 yards on seven carries.

Stevenson was effective in the passing game. He had 40 yards and a touchdown on five receptions. His touchdown was impressive because quarterback Drake Maye was pressured and looked like he was going to scramble, but he basically pushed the ball toward Stevenson, who made an adjustment back to the ball, caught it, and scored.

Stevenson is heading into his sixth career season, all with the Patriots. Last season, he played in 14 games and finished the year with 603 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

The veteran back has become infamous for his ball-security issues after fumbling seven times in 2024. Stevenson improved and fumbled just three times last season.

New England will hope for a better result against Seattle than it had in the 29-13 Super Bowl loss, even without Henderson. The bigger concern for the second-year running back will be healing enough that he can return to the practice field, and he will hope to take the field in Week 2 when the Patriots play the Pittsburgh Steelers .
