Xabi Alonso confirmed Reece James missed Chelsea's 5-1 win over Bournemouth with a knee issue.
The Chelsea captain felt discomfort before the game and was not passed fit to play a part.
"Yeah, he felt something but after we did the tests later in the afternoon and he had some little issues on the knee so we need to check how long it will be," Alonso said.
There was better news for Chelsea elsewhere, with Jordan Henderson scoring twice in an impressive all-round display.
Asked whether Henderson had been signed for his goals, Alonso said: "We signed him for everything.
"If he's able to score two beauties as today, we are more than happy for him.
"But apart from the goals, he's done many, many good things."

Alonso was also pleased with Chelsea's overall performance as they responded emphatically to their defeat before the international break.
"I think that today was a very complete performance," he said.
"We were in control for most of the parts of the game, so I'm happy with that.
"We had a good stability in defence as well, just a couple of situations in the first half.
"And the second one, after conceding the 3-1 for eight minutes to the 4-1, we were not in control but overall happy with the game, with the performance.
"It's many positives to take from the future and other ones to keep going."
