The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs are headed to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Saturday to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in a showdown of SEC title contenders. Unfortunately, it sounds like there's a chance that severe weather could impact the contest.
One prominent meteorologist is suggesting that the game could be impacted by a potential hurricane that could even result in the contest being moved or rescheduled.
While it's still very early, current models project that Isaias, which is currently classified as a tropical depression, could strike the Gulf Coast south of Mobile, Ala., at some point Saturday, which could obviously interfere with the game in Tuscaloosa.
"Tropical Depression Nine [Isaias] has developed in the southwestern Gulf and is forecast to intensify into a hurricane over the next 48 to 72 hours," the National Weather Service office in Birmingham wrote on its website Tuesday afternoon . "Some model uncertainties still exist in regards to timing, intensity, and exact track, so refinements to this forecast are likely. Most impacts to Central Alabama will be felt in the form of gusty winds and steady rainfall Friday into Saturday. Continue to check the latest forecasts from official sources. Start considering preparations for power outages and flooding."
The SEC has already issued a statement indicating that the conference is monitoring the situation ahead of this weekend's slate of college football games.
While it's still too early to know the exact strength and direction of the storm, prominent Alabama-based meteorologist James Spann has warned that moving the game is "clearly on the table."
"The idea of moving the game, it's on the table," Spann told AL.com's Michael Casagrande on Tuesday . "I'm saying it's clearly on the table. It would be a nightmare for everybody involved. But if we do get a Category 1, Category 2 hurricane coming right up Mobile Bay [on] Saturday morning, I don't know if you wouldn't be playing that game in Tuscaloosa that you've got the chance of winds gusting to 50 miles an hour, torrential rain and the chance of isolated tornadoes on top of everything else."
It will certainly be interesting to see how the storm continues to develop.
