Edgewood's Heinbaugh advances to D-II district individually in boys golf

Ashtabula County boys golf teams were shut out of the Division II district tournament Tuesday.

But it wasn't a total loss, as one individual advanced to the next round.

Edgewood's Jackson Heinbaugh qualified to the district as an individual with an 41-40-81 at the Quail Hollow Sectional Tuesday.

The sophomore tied Hawken senior Owen Khan and Kirtland senior Nick Nead, but earned the district spot with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

"Going into the playoff, I knew it wasn't going to be easy going up against two upperclassmen," Heinbaugh said. "I had known that those boys would have a big distance advantage on me, but I knew that with accuracy, I could for sure make up for it."

Heinbaugh said he focused on playing his own round.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to play [Tuesday], and happy that I qualified," he said.

Warriors coach Ben Frable said Heinbaugh played a steady round.

"He didn't get too high on good holes, then didn't get down on himself after bad holes," Frable said. "He has been playing some really good golf these last couple of weeks. For him to win that playoff against two other seasoned golfers says a lot about his mental game. That was a great time to have his first birdie of the day."

Akron Springfield sophomore Nathan Vorthong, with a 43-34-77 and Kirtland junior John Scalish, 41-39-80, were the other two individual qualifiers.

The top three teams and three individuals not on a qualifying team qualified for the district tournament, which is scheduled for next Tuesday at Windmill Lakes.

Locally, Pymatuning Valley finished ninth with a 355; Edgewood, 10th, 357; Jefferson, 13th, 391 and Conneaut, 14th, 451.

For the Lakers, Andrew Wludyga, 42-41-83 and Logan Paul, 45-38-83, led the way.

Rylan Compan posted a 45-42-87; Adam Croston, 56-46-102 and Maxwell Moores, 50-59-109.

In addition to Heinbaugh, Connor Penny carded a 44-45-89, Michael Brydle, 48-38-86; Lucas Bisbee, 48-53-101 and Seve Ponteri, 58-53-111, for the Warriors.

Tristan Gilman led the Falcons with a 48-45-93, followed by Ryan Cotton at 47-47-94; Landon Seames, 50-49-99; Gabe Stone, 52-53-105 and Austin Harrower, 63-51-114.

Brady Morrison was low score with 39-49-88 for the Spartans. Jacob Thompson added a 53-46-99; Brock Richards, 56-75-131; Kaydin Hand, 68-65-133 and Kortez Gonzalez, 73-66-139.

The district-qualifying teams were Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin with a 324; Perry 324 and West Geauga, 328.

Saint John is competing in the Division III sectional Wednesday at Riverview Golf Club.

Geneva, Lakeside and Madison are scheduled to compete in the D-I sectional tournament Monday at Quail Hollow.
