Dylan Lonergan Will Not Start For Rutgers: Will He Play At All In Return?

The stage was set for Dylan Lonergan to make his return to Chestnut Hill early in the 2026 season.

Instead, Lonergan was removed with an injury during Rutgers ' 37-21 season-opening loss to UMass on Thursday night.

Earlier in the week, Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano announced that AJ Surace would start on Friday against Boston College after Lonergan was unable to practice.

Right now, we know that Lonergan will not start the game but it will be interesting to see if he plays at all, if active. We will not know this answer until the injury report comes out before kick off.

During his game week press conference, Eagles' head coach Bill O'Brien spoke on Lonergan.

"Dylan's a really good player," O'Brien said. "I've said that before. I think I said that a couple weeks ago or whenever you guys asked me about that last. Excellent quarterback. Very smart. I think he's got a really, really talented arm. Very competitive and, you know, it's gonna be a big challenge for us."

Lonergan went 16-for-29 for 242 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions before being removed in the fourth quarter.

Boston College will host Rutgers in the Red Bandana game on Friday night at 7:30pm from Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill.
