Carse & McKinney put Durham on top against Middlesex

Brydon Carse's first five-wicket haul in almost two years and a sublime century from Ben McKinney helped promotion-chasing Durham take control of their Division Two clash with Middlesex.

The visitors made a good start to the day, as they saw out a challenging opening hour with the bat. Durham then struck back with four wickets in the second half of the morning session, with Ben Raine taking two of them.

The hosts picked up where they left off after lunch and Carse wrapped up the tail to secure his first five-for in any form of cricket since taking 6-42 in a Test match against New Zealand in 2024.

It was also his first County Championship five-wicket haul since 2021 and saw Middlesex bowled out for 203, a deficit of 49.

Division Two front-runners Durham then took the upper hand in this match as they made an excellent start to their second innings, Alex Lees and McKinney combining for an opening stand worth 81. McKinney then passed three figures and Durham closed on 204-2, leading by 253 runs.

Durham's performance on the second day has given them a platform to win the game, a result which would seal their return to Division One, while Middlesex have plenty of work to do if they are to take something from their visit to the North East.

Resuming on 70-2, Middlesex's Nathan Fernandes and Max Holden chipped away at Durham's lead in the first half-hour, with conditions challenging for batting.

The pair's partnership passed 50 before Kasey Aldridge made the breakthrough, as he removed Holden, who could only edge an attempted drive straight to third slip. Durham got their fourth wicket soon after, as Will Rhodes made a mess of Fernandes' stumps.

Raine got Durham's fifth when Ben Geddes edged to Colin Ackermann at second slip, and claimed another on the stroke of lunch, as Ryan Higgins sent one straight to first slip.

The hosts continued where they left off after the break, with Raine getting Zafar Gohar lbw.

Carse then got his third of the innings as he trapped Seb Morgan lbw for a duck. Harry Duke and Tom Helm frustrated Durham with a 40-run partnership but Carse had Helm caught behind.

The England bowler then wrapped up the innings as he got Naavya Sharma lbw, with the hosts securing a 49-run first innings lead.

Lees and McKinney got Durham's second innings off to a solid start, with the pair finding the boundary at regular intervals.

The Durham openers notched up their 50 partnership and continued to build their lead as it passed three figures. Lees then fell as he was bowled by Higgins, but McKinney continued his good start as he reached 50.

Rhodes joined McKinney at the crease and looked assured with a lovely cut shot bringing up the pair's 50 partnership.

McKinney continued to look good in the middle, scoring heavily through the off side, and the left-handed opener helped his team extend their lead past 200.

Middlesex hit back when Rhodes was caught at gully off the bowling of Morgan, but that didn't stop McKinney making his third century of the summer and he got there in style with a lovely shot through the covers.

Mayank Agarwal joined McKinney at the crease and the pair saw their side through to close without further loss as bad light brought an early end to the day.
