Could NY Giants Make Joey Porter Jr. Trade Soon? NYG Insider Adds Fuel to Speculation After Week 1 Win

A New York Giants trade for disgruntled Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. in the next few weeks is a real possibility, according to a new report from a team insider.

On Sunday night, the Giants kicked off the John Harbaugh era with a strong performance against division rivals the Dallas Cowboys . The Cowboys entered the Week 1 matchup as a popular dark horse pick in the NFC; however, the new-look Giants pushed them around with a physical approach led by Jaxson Dart and their run game.

While the defense put forth a solid effort, a case can be made that the Giants dodged a bullet against a very talented Dallas defense that was rusty in their 2026 season debut. New York had no sacks, only three QB hits, and the Cowboys just missed on a few big plays in the passing game against a banged-up Big Blue cornerback corps.

Heading into Week 2, the Giants have four different corners on injured reserve. Fortunately for them, it is not their top corners, but their CB group wasn't a strength entering the season and could be a problem if their front seven doesn't get consistent pressure. That is why some have linked the team to the talented but unhappy Steelers cornerback.

But how likely is a Giants trade for Porter Jr. to improve their secondary? Well, according to the New York Post's Ryan Dunleavy, it is possible because Porter Jr. has fans inside the organization.

In a new conversation with Brandon Love, the Giants reporter claimed a trade in the next week or two "doesn't make sense" for the team, but it is "on the radar" for the front office. Dunleavy noted the Giants are happy with their CBs, but an injury could quickly change plans to pursue a trade.

"I had heard over the years that it was splitting hairs between Deonte Banks and Joey Porter Jr. in the 2023 draft. The Giants obviously went with Banks on a slight trade up, but there was a lot of interest in Porter. They had very similar grades in the building, talent-wise. The last two years, they looked foolish because Banks wasn't very good and Porter was… It's funny how these things go in a circle, and maybe in a couple of weeks they'll be teammates."

Porter Jr. is currently dealing with a back injury. However, many believe it is being used as a holdout excuse as he seeks a big-money contract extension, with this being the final season of his rookie contract. Although he hasn't earned year-end honors, the son of the Steelers is great is viewed as one of the best young corners in the AFC and would certainly be a huge addition for the Giants.
