Aaron Glenn makes stunning QB2 admission as Jets decision takes shape

New York Jets have made their decision on who will serve as Geno Smith's backup quarterback, with rookie Cade Klubnik earning the role following a strong preseason.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters that Klubnik will be the team's No. 2 quarterback, giving the fourth-round pick a significant role behind Smith.

Klubnik's performances during the preseason have impressed the Jets coaching staff, helping him emerge as the preferred option for the backup job.

The rookie had already caught Glenn's attention with his showing in the Jets' opening preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Klubnik completed 5-of-7 passes for 56 yards in that contest and appeared comfortable operating the offence. Glenn was particularly impressed by the quarterback's confidence and ability to make plays with his legs.

"When we watched him in college, he was the same way," Glenn said postgame. "Nothing changes. He has some moxie to him. He's very confident. He's confident in his arm. He's confident in his ability to elude and make plays with his feet.

"And his ability to be able to come out and operate with the first group the way he did, to me, I thought was outstanding. Still some things that he has to learn, still mistakes that he made in the game, but listen, he's going to be quick to correct those, just like the other players are. We're going to continue to move forward."

Klubnik was once viewed as a potential first-round pick before his final season at Clemson changed his draft outlook.

The Jets ultimately selected him in the fourth round, and his preseason performances have now earned him the opportunity to begin his NFL career as Smith's primary backup.

Glenn's decision represents a significant vote of confidence in the rookie as the Jets finalise their quarterback room.
