Friday night lights highlights ― Richmond Hill edges Jenkins in thrilling win

Benedictine came out on top in a back and forth affair with visiting Camden County as the Cadets held on for a 27-23 victory in a gamed that included a number of top notch individual performances.

Richmond Hill got a late touchdown pass as the host Wildcats improved to 3-0 on the season in a non-region battle with visiting Jenkins.

Calvary Day continued to excel as the Cavs rolled to a dominating win over visiting St. Pius.

South Effingham improved to 3-0 on the year as the Mustangs beat previously unbeaten Windsor Forest.

Here's a look at how Savannah area teams fared in the third week of the high school football season in Georgia.

Senior quarterback James Mobley IV had another big night for the Cavs as he completed 16 of 18 passes for 212 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. Freshman Braylon Brown also saw time behind center and completed 5 of 6 passes for 91 yards and the first scoring pass of his prep career.

Marlon Knight Jr. had three catches for 82 yards and a pair of scores and Ty Pinckney had seven receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown. Jalen Hicks added eight receptions for 87 yards for the Cavs.

Calvary's strong rushing tandem of Zay Middleton and Ca'Den Jones had another strong game. Middleton ran for 115 yards and a score on six carries and Jones ran for a pair of touchdowns and 74 yards on seven carries.

The Cavs will play at Ambassador Christian (3-0) in Huntersville, N.C. on Friday, Sept. 11, with kickoff at 7 p.m.

The battle between two of the top public school teams in the Coastal Empire lived up to the hype as host Richmond Hill edged the Warriors.

Gunner Mobley hit Nick Cameron with an 11-yard scoring pass with 1:07 left for the winning margin, according to Nathan Dominitz of the Prep Sports Report.

Junior Tasean Rhodes returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns and added a 5-yard scoring run for Jenkins, which feel to 0-3 playing a tough schedule with all three losses coming on the road. Torean Wilson added a 16-yard scoring run for the Warriors, who have a bye week before hosting Evans on Friday, Sept. 18.

Mobley was 11 of 17 passing for 176 yards with three touchdowns and an interception for the Wildcats, who improved to 3-0 on the year. He connected with Eli Grant, the senior who has committed to Liberty University, five times for 138 yards and two scores. He also picked of a pass and had three tackles as a defensive back.

CJ Menzie rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries for the Wildcats.

Senior Layton Steigelman had 14 tackles and Jaleal Barnard had fives stops with two for losses and a pair of sacks for Richmond Hill, which plays at Ware County (1-1) on Friday, Sept. 11.

South Effingham improved to 3-0 on the season as the Mustangs beat the Knights in a non-region matchup at Savannah High Stadium.

Senior Khyran White had a pair of touchdown runs for South Effingham and Danny Murtha also had a short rushing score. Junior Semaj Calhoun had an 85-yard kickoff return for a score for the Mustangs.

Windsor Forest junior Jayden Martin, who picked up an offer from Wake Forest last week, was 12 of 20 passing for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also ran for 67 yards and a score. Dwane Franklin had four catches for 96 yards and a touchdown for the Knights, who have a bye before playing at Bryan County (0-3) on Friday, Sept. 18.

Landyn White and Brian Ford had pivotal interceptions for South Effingham, which has a bye week before hosting Greenbrier on Friday, Sept. 18.

The Rebels won their first game of the season after a pair of close losses as Effingham County rolled to a non-region win over visiting New Hampstead.

Effingham lost its opener on the road to Richmond Hill 22-21 and was edged by visiting Tift County 25-22 last week.

Sophomore quarterback Matthew Dillon was 9 of 15 for 116 yards and a pair of scores as he hit Malik Letman and Trayvis Hunter with touchdown passes, according to Donald Heath, who covered the game for the Effingham Herald.

Letman also returned a punt for a score for Effingham County, and Kris Swinney saw time at quarterback, adding a touchdown run.

The Rebel defense was lights out with eight sacks on the night, plus a 35-yard interception return for a score by Jernard Albright, the senior who has committed to Florida State. New Hampstead had -35 rushing yards and six yards of total offense, Heath reported.

Effingham County (1-2) has a bye week before traveling to face Lakeside on Friday, Sept. 18.

Host Islands improved to 3-0 on the season as the Sharks edged Bryan County.

Shark senior quarterback Mason McLaughlin had a six-yard scoring run and Islands scored its other touchdown on a fake punt as junior Preston Allison connected with senior Michael Cooler on a 54-yard touchdown pass.

Cooler was also a difference maker at linebacker as he had five tackles and a pair of sacks.

Jackson Tripp also played well at linebacker and led the Sharks with 66 yards on 13 carries at fullback.

Islands has a bye week before going on the road to face Brantley County (1-2) on Friday, Sept. 18.

Liberty County won its first game of the season as the Panthers won a non-region matchup over Johnson at Groves Stadium.

Senior running back Noel Best led the way for the Panthers as he rushed for 165 yards and three scores on 17 carries.

Junior quarterback Jaeir Robers was 5 of 6 passing for 45 yards with a scoring pass to Aaron Brown and he also rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Johnson got a 45-yard scoring run by senior quarterback Shamari King and a short touchdown run from Jayden Young.

Senior Zaevon Gray had a 60-yard pick six for the Atom Smashers (1-2), who have a bye before playing at Pierce County on Friday, Sept. 18.

Liberty County (1-2) will host McIntosh County Academy (2-1) on Friday, Sept. 11.

The Raiders fell to 1-2 on the season with a non-region road loss at Glynn Academy.

Junior quarterback Caden Godbee was 14 of 25 passing for 284 yards and three scores and an interception for SCPS.

He connected with senior William Bucey five times for 136 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior linebacker Ivyn Richardson had 16 tackles for the Raiders, Aiden Frazier had 12 and Jalen Wright had 11 stops.

Savannah Christian is set to host Fellowship Christian (1-1) on Friday, Sept. 11, at Pooler Stadium.

Athens Academy 7, Savannah Country Day 6

Thomas Holland rushed for 77 yards and a score on 17 carries for host SCD, which fell to 0-4 on the season.

Wells Headley had eight tackles, with four for losses, for the Hornets who are set to play at Porter Gaud (2-1) on Friday, Sept. 11.
