No. 5 Texas releases depth chart for Texas State game
The depth chart for the season opener features several surprises.
AUSTIN, Texas — Kickoff is approaching at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium between the No. 5 Texas Longhorns and the Texas State Bobcats and there's finally a depth chart for head coach Steve Sarkisian's program.
The first surprise on the depth chart is senior Hollywood Smothers listed as the first co-starter at running back with fifth-year Raleek Brown. For the first time, the staff includes all six scholarship backs with sophomore Michael Terry III No. 4 on the depth chart.
At the WR (H) position, sophomore Daylan McCutcheon remains in front of freshman Jermaine Bishop, albeit as a co-starter.
In another surprise, senior Spencer Shannon is a co-starter with fifth-year Michael Masunas at the TE (Y) position, but listed first. At TE (H), sophomore Nick Townsend is the first co-starter with sophomore Emaree Winston.
A headline takeaway is sophomore Dylan Sikorski ahead of sixth-year Laurence Seymore at the left guard position with the two players considered co-starters. Less important but notable is sophomore Devin Coleman passing senior Jaydon Chatman as a co-starter.
On defense, junior Maraad Watson is the starter ahead of junior Alex January at one defensive tackle position.
At defensive end, sophomore Lance Jackson was able to hold off the push from junior Zina Umeozulu.
After a strong preseason camp, freshman linebacker Kosi Okpala is the backup at the weak-side linebacker position.
Senior Colton Vasek is listed exclusively at strong-side linebacker.
Another defensive headline is junior Kobe Black starting over senior Derek Williams at free safety.
On special teams, Brown is paired with senior Ryan Niblett on kickoff return and Bishop is the backup to Niblett on punt return.
