The Milwaukee Brewers captured their first World Series title on Wednesday, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays to make franchise history. While several players delivered memorable performances throughout the championship run, catcher William Contreras ultimately took home the World Series MVP award.
Contreras also found himself at the center of what MLB considers one of the most memorable sports photographs in recent memory. The image captures the emotional moment Milwaukee clinched the championship, showing the catcher on his knees with his arms raised toward the sky in celebration.
The photograph's simplicity makes it even more striking, featuring only Contreras and a lone bat resting beside him. Its composition has drawn comparisons to some of the world's most celebrated works of art, with some suggesting it belongs in the Louvre in Paris alongside the Mona Lisa.
The image also offers an impressive view of Tropicana Field, giving the venue a moment in the spotlight despite the Rays' defeat. As Rodger Sherman pointed out on Bluesky, capturing a shot like this is only possible inside a domed stadium.
"one of the best images in baseball history and you could only take it in a domed venue with prominent rigging all around the ceiling for lights and cameras. big Tropicana Field W," Sherman wrote.
Contreras finished the World Series batting .381, collecting eight hits and driving in four runs. Across the entire postseason, he hit .373 with three home runs and nine RBIs. Sports has always produced unforgettable images, and Getty Images photographer Carmen Mandato can take pride in adding another iconic moment to that history.
